Kas hurtled back over the city to the site of the battle only to find things deathly still. No skeletons. No civilians. No Vindicators. No paragon. Casting about with his senses for any indication where he might need to go, his awareness washed over Herta. She was waving, obviously trying to get his attention. He frowned.
Of all the former members of Laputa at the school, Herta was his least favorite. Try as he might, he just couldn't forget the assault on Beatrice's family. Too many people had been hurt that day.

Still, she was at the school now and he had taken it upon himself to trust Lexus and Armande who were no less guilty than she was. Sighing to himself, he descended to about ten feet off the ground. If this was a trap, at least the altitude afforded him a tiny bit of advantage.

"Tantivy, what are you doing out here? The city isn't safe."

"Pict told me to back you up," Tantivy said. "Catch."

She gave no warning before throwing something small to the junior. His senses washed over it and registered the gift she'd brought: a communicator. "It's already synced with the channel I'm on," she said. "So, Paragon... The guy is supposed to be tough. What's the plan?"

Lex gives Pict an incredulous look at his assertion that he trusted Tantivy.

That figured. He was willing to overlook the attack on Beatrice's family, the bombs, and the time she attempted to get him to murder Mira with his family's lives on the line.

"Not interested," Lex says turning and waving a hand over his shoulder as he left, "Doing just fine without relying the Vindicators."

        "As always."

He speaks up as he leaves, "Anybody who doesn't feel like going with him, I'd really appreciate it if you could back up the others downstairs. Need all the muscle we can get. I'll be patrolling the grounds."

Kas caught the communicator and tucked it into his ear, the device almost disappearing completely into the canal. It wasn't a replacement for his helmet and the advantages it supplied, but it was something at least.

"The first thing I want is to locate Backlash and Hubris. I'm fairly certain they fell victim to the necromancer. I need to get them somewhere safe. Then I need to find this Dominique Infinity...Paragon and divine his motives. When it appeared the mages had the upper hand and were going to win, he arrived and lent assistance to Blue Knight and me."

"The Knight says he is...and I quote; a right-proper villain, so I need to make certain he isn't simply taking advantage of this attack to unleash his own criminal scheme. Additionally, the Knight thought he was supposed to be dead and while I'm aware there are people like ourselves for whom death is nothing more than a temporary inconvenience, I would like the truth of the matter."

Kas ran his hand over his hair and let go a long, tired breath.

"Once that's handled, there's still the matter of the necromancer and his compatriot...a wizard who can turn himself into a flying powerhouse made of metal...to deal with. Those two took down four Vindicators without breaking a sweat, so I'm not joking when I tell you we could die out here."

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

Violet shook her head at Pict's question. "Hafta wait for it to melt."

            "Lex, wait."
Violet caught up with him before he left the room. "Like them or not, the Vindicators are the authority here. You can't just ignore them. If you want change, you have to work within the system. This could be your first step."

Jack did as Pict had told him, with Armande's help he took the injured members of the Vindicators and Harry to the Wreck Room. Jack took stock of his options - he wasn't as certain as Pict was that he could beat Tallemaja on his own. He'd gotten lucky in his opinion in their last fight and driven her off. That wasn't an option now Jack thought as he looked over to Harry, the other teen looked like he'd been through hell and Jack was hesitant to ask him to do much of anything as from get himself taken care of. That meant he needed to think really far outside the box.

Thankfully Dr. Tally was the kind of doctor who got right to work taking care of the injured and Jack moved to deal with Tallemaja. He found Beatrice near the section of the Wreck Room that had been converted to hold Otso, she'd been crying more and now that he understood what had happened to his Finnish friend the American understood why. Jack hated to ask her for anything given what she was going through but the situation didn't give him any other option.

"Beatrice, I need your help: I need to find Mary as soon as possible but because of her powers I can't track her by scent, but you can track her no matter how she alters herself."

Gwyn muttered a soft 'thank ya' to Jack and Armande for getting him downstairs to the infirmary. But of course, no doctor.

                "Where's Martin?" He asked Armande.

"He could have us back up to full speed in na time. Either way, we can't just stay here." He stood on his own power, and with a bit more mental effort than it took, his armor sprang into life, shedding no light. Another thing he never really understood, but it would have to take a back seat to whatever had happened back in town.

"Heck, even the American girl could make us some adrenaline, ya? We can still help-the kung fu wizard beat us nasty, but he's not unstoppable."

Lex looks back at Violet and sighs, "I played it their way once. People died. The guy calling the shots back there? He had a sword to my throat at one point. One of those people he trusts threatened to murder my family. And that's the smallest crime they were responsible for. Half the people who might turns on us at any moment? They're here because they let them come here."

Lex shakes his head, "I don't trust them, Violet. After all of that, how could I? And the truth of the matter is I don't need them. I don't need any authority to keep people here safe."

Martin did as he was told, and then more commands cut across the communicator. "She says to go inside. She'll meet you soon."

Inside, Martin found himself the lone inhabitant of the book store.
Martin inhales deeply again trying to determine when someone was here last. He also listened to see if sounds of battle were still going on outside. He looks around for video cameras as well, his unease that he was being played was growing once more.

"Says who?" Lex asks, mildly, "I'm not Jack or Martin, okay, but I'm no pushover, Violet."

"Look, you want to work with them, that's cool. Adding me to that mix is only going to make it worse for them. I don't trust them, and I don't respect the guy in charge. That ain't healthy for a team and it's just going to make matters worse for everybody,"
Lex notes, "And I can't be sure that if we get into a fight that they won't leave me hanging. I ain't risking my life on that."

"Besides, if I think I need a hand I'm sure I'll be able to find somebody,"
Lex shrugs, "Assuming nobody hears the noise and comes looking? Well I can pretty much run from here to England in five minutes; I'm sure I'll be able to find somebody on the grounds to lend a hand."

"Well, we'll just nip off to the pub for a pint then. Let us know when you're done." Violet sighed. Why did boys have to be so macho?

"No. Wait. Don't go off by yourself. I'll... I'll come with you." Violet coated her feet in ice. "I'm not as fast as you but I can still go. It'll be better if you don't go alone." She didn't want Lex to go off and get hurt by himself. Kirstie would be devastated and Violet didn't want to see that.

                            Lex sighed, "Look, I-"

He was going to say he didn't need a babysitter, but as he turned to talk to Violet he was forced to come to terms with one issue. Sending her off would probably mean she was going to put her life in Pict's hands.

"Okay, right. Two things though. If I tell you to run I expect you to run, okay? I'm really fast, I'll catch up real quick, but I'll be waiting for you to go first. If you don't go, I can't go," He continues walking again, "Two, I heal. Doesn't matter if it gets blow up, bit off, torn apart, chewed to pieces, or what. If I'm alive I'll heal. Just need some juice and I'll be fine. So if I eat it, just shove my hand in an electrical socket before you go for your pub crawl."

"Beyond that... I'm pretty sure you know what I bring to the table, power wise. Right?"
                            Lex asks.

"You run fast and you shoot lightning?" Violet was pretty sure that was all he did.

"I can make ice. And shoot it. Like I did to Chuck." She ran a couple of steps to catch up. "You're the boss. I just want to help."

NVAE (Lex and Violet; NPCs: Catargi)
Together, the pair scoured the school, looking for anyone who hadn't yet evacuated to the sublevel. Lex and Lexus had already cleared the boys' dorms; together they swept the other dorm building before moving on to the school itself. As they returned to the main building, they ran into Miss Catargi. "There you are," she said, looking to a list she was carrying.

It was a roster of the students: they had taken a tally of who was in the Wreck Room, and had sent faculty members out to find the missing.
                                • Armande
                                • Caspian, Fiore
                                • Curie, Martin
                                • Curie, Elle
                                • Flaegler, Kas
                                • Ljungdhal, Mary
                                • Marceau, Beatrice
                                • Murphy, Lex
                                • Nelson, Tatjana
                                • Percy, Harry
                                • Radikovich, Herta
                                • Rauf, Lexus
                                • Rexroth, Jack
                                • Sheer, Violet
                                • Tharivol, Mario
                                • Venefica

Lex could account for most of them: Lexus, Fiore, Mario, and Venefica were with Pict; Jack, Harry, and Armande had been sent to the sublevel, according to Pict; Kas and Herta were in the city; Mary was evil...

For the life of him, Lex had no inkling where Martin, his sister, and his girlfriend were; he couldn't account for Beatrice either.

                                VIENNA: SKY (Magnitude; NPCs: Tantivy)
"You want to search for the big guns," Tantivy said, nodding. "I can do that much faster than you can."

She took off then, stampeding back down the stairs of the skyscraper and reappearing seconds later on the street. "No sign of them on the first few blocks," she said across the communicator. "Are you sure this is about where they would have been?"

                                THE DUST JACKET (Martin)
It was quiet inside the store. Looking around, Martin found the place devoid of cameras. It seemed that security for the mages was not a priority; indeed, even the front door had only a very rudimentary lock.

NVAE, WRECK ROOM: MAIN ROOM (Jack, Harry; NPCs: Plenty)
Doctor Talley saw them as they came in, helping Kiln to limp along, Fey in Armande's hands. She rushed from her youngest son and moved to help them lie down on the floor.

As Armande moved to position himself at the entrance, Blue Knight scanned the room, looking for one student in particular. "Where's Martin?" he asked. "He could have us back up to full speed in na time."

"He hasn't been down," Doctor Talley said. "There're a handful of students unaccounted for--some of the teachers are out looking for them."

Jack spotted the list the woman was carrying: they had checked each of the evacuated students off against the roster, and Beatrice was among the names that had not been marked off. She was still out there, but close, according to his nose. Jack passed by Armande and Blue Knight, following Beatrice's scent to the door of Otso's chamber.

The Welsh boy looked back out across the sea of faces. "Either way, we can't just stay here."

"We don't intend to," said Doctor Fisher. "The plan was to move everyone to one location--a temporary shelter until Quintessence could gate everyone off-site. So far, no one has heard from him."

NVAE, WRECK ROOM: OTSO'S CHAMBER (Jack; NPCs: Beatrice, Otso, Tallemaja)
Otso looked up from his book when the door to his chamber opened. Immediately his heart sank. It had been days since he'd seen his girlfriend--since he had volunteered to lock himself up, out of fear what his feral instincts would do to her or others. The bear scrambled to get to his feet and raced towards the wall of his cell: the Wreck Room manufactured a wall that divided the chamber, allowing members of the faculty to come and bring him food without having to worry about him attacking them the moment they entered the room.

His paws fell on the transparent wall as his heart raced. "Beatrice." He had never said her name more softly. "What are you doing here?"

"They're evacuating the school," she said. "They brought everyone to the Wreck Room, but... I..." She teared up. "I won't leave you."

"Evacuation?" Otso asked. "What's going on?"

"I'm not sure," Beatrice said. "I just..." She put her hands on the other side of the glass-like surface. She smiled as it looked like their hands were pressed together. "It doesn't matter. You. You are all that matters."

Otso looked away. "I'm sorry, Beatrice. I know I should-"

"I understand," she said. "It's been hard, but I understand. I just..."

The door opened, and Otso's froze. Beatrice turned and her eyes fell on herself. "Oh," the second Beatrice said. "Well, I suppose there's no need for such disguises, is there?" As the door closed behind her, the newcomer transformed into Doctor Fisher. "Hello, Otso. Beatrice. How's everyone doing?"

"Tallemaja," Otso growled. Strong paws pounded on the glass.

Beatrice stood paralyzed by confusion. It only served to make Tallemaja's grin broaden. "I came to see if Otso would help me..."

                                "Go to hell!" he snarled.

"...But maybe Beatrice would help me instead?"

"Beatrice!" Otso snapped. "Get out of here! Get someone! Get help! Get... get one of the teachers--the Vindicators! Anyone! Just get out of here!"

Tallemaja reached into her own stomach and pulled a small canister out of her own body. "This has been giving me fits for a while, Beatrice... Do you know what's inside?"

                                Beatrice shook her head.

"GO!" Otso screamed, continuing to pound against the walls of his cell.

"Power. Beatrice, inside this canister is power. Power that could potentially save Otso."

"Don't listen to her!" Otso roared. "She's lying!"

"If we could open it, we might be able to help him turn back... I'm not sure, but..."

"What would I need to do?" Beatrice asked.

"No!" Otso screamed. "Beatrice, she's from Laputa! The people who killed Cornelis! They... Beatrice, she doesn't want to help me!"

"I do," Tallemaja insisted. "Beatrice, I want to help the entire world. I helped Otso's father. Did you know that? I used my powers to make Ironside attack the assembly, sparking the United Nations to action. How many months had Matt Kowalski spent trying to rally the world's governments against the UUB? It took me one afternoon to save his dying cause."

"And how many people get hurt?" Otso roared. "How many people did you hurt for that, Tallemaja?"

"Hurt," Tallemaja insisted. "People were hurt. How many people has the UUB killed, Otso? How can you compare it? I hurt a few people to save how many thousands? Millions?"

Beatrice's eyes were on the canister. "How do I open it?"

Otso continued to scream for help as Tallemaja offered it to Beatrice. "The only way to open it is to need what's inside. It's puzzled me for some time, but I think I understand now."

Beatrice held the canister in her hands. "What's inside it?" she asked.

Tallemaja flexed her hand. Her fingers elongated and became thin as her flesh turned to steel. Her fingers shifted into blades--blades she wasted no time in raking across Beatrice's stomach.

As Otso screamed, Beatrice's fingers began to slip. The canister was about to fall.

The door of the room opened as Tallemaja stabbed Beatrice with her other hand.

Jack saw Beatrice eviscerated by Doctor Fisher. He watched as the open canister fell to the ground.

A single golden apple spilled from inside, and rolled towards Jack's feet.
