    [Jack Rexroth]

    Condition: Bruised (x1)

"All right, lads and lasses," Pict said, "are we all friends again? Can we get back to the bigger issue now? Legions of skeletons? Terrorist cells? All of that?

"Jack, you said that Tallemaja's a shapeshifter, right? It's probably out of the question that you could track her by smell, but if she's looking to take advantage of the confusion, we need to neutralize her before she has a chance to act."

Armande reached into his pocket and pulled his cell phone, then handed to to Jack. "She's the most recent message I received. Maybe you can use that to track her. I dunno."
Jack took the phone and looked at it for a moment and for once wished he had a different set of powers, specifically one that would let him somehow track Tallemaja down. Pict was right, there was no way for Jack to track her since Tallemaja's scent changed when her form did. Then he realized that he might have a starting point and turned to Tantivity.

"Herta, do you know who Tallemaja is posing as here at the school?"

"Mister McClanahan!" Pict looked back and saw Mario waving to them from the front entrance. "Fiore and Violet have a wizard restrained in here!"
Jack grunted. If one of the mages was here that proved the giant skeletons were a distraction and given that they'd not shown up yet meant either they couldn't reach the school or the Vindicators and Kas had handled them. "I'm willing to be he's made some kind of threat too, I say we introduce the wizard to our dragon."

Lowering Blue knight down to the closest rooftop, Kas shouts up at the mystery man who has been assisting him. "I need to gather the fallen Vindicators and get them back to the school! Did you observe where the mage fled to?"

Kas regretted the fact that Quintessence must already have returned to the academy, because his teleport ability would have been very useful at the moment. Casting around for something he could use as a platform to make litter for the wounded, the young NS also looked for any remaining skeletons.

There was a lot to do and fewer and fewer people to do it. One mage escaped entirely. Another simply temporarily removed from play by dumping him into a river large enough for ship traffic. The remains of a horde of rampaging giant skeletons...

...and whatever this had been a distraction for.

"If I was a comic book hero this would somehow be within the bounds of my power and imagination to handle. I hate comic books." He groused to himself.

NVAE, MAIN LEVEL (Lex and Violet; NPCs: Chuck, Fiore, Lexus, Mario)
"Go ahead," Chuck said as Lex rounded the corner. "My documents are in my back right pocket."

"'Sup Chuck," Lex said, stepping into the the cluster of students gathered around him. "You know trying to get underage girls to touch your butt is a crime, right?"

"Don't touch him!" Violet exclaimed, taking a step back. "It could be a trick." She narrowed her eyes at the bound magus. "Diplomatic immunity means sweet #$^@ all to us so we ain't letting you go."

Lex gave a snort. "Diplomatic immunity? You? Ha!" He shook his head at Chuck. "All that means is that you get deported back to your local hell hole after the police charge you, doesn't mean @$*# to us. We're not the police, and we're not stupid enough to let you go so you can attack us some more. Seriously, what kind of idiot are you?"

"The kind who's about to see-"

Lex looked to Fiore. "Hey, man, can you gag him with a vine or something? Chucklehead here is supposed to be some kind of magic user. And I just don't like him."

        VIENNA (Martin; NPCs: Driver)
"You picked me up a block from the Vindicator school, it's safe to assume I can do something. Now, who hired you and where are you taking me?"

"I try not to assume," the driver said. "My father always said, 'When you assume, you make an ass of you and me.'" He fumbled with something in the seat beside him, only to offer Tallemaja a clipboard. "All I was told was to wait at that intersection, and someone--no name or description--would get into the car. I wasn't supposed to ask questions--wasn't supposed to make small talk. I was hired to drive them to this location... a book store here in the city."

Tallemaja's eyes went to the order sheet, and to the credit card that had been used to pay for the car: Charles S. Mayberry.

NVAE: FRONT QUAD (Jack; NPCs: Armande, Dragon, Guard, Herta, Pict, Venefica)
"Herta, do you know who Tallemaja is posing as here at the school?"

"Well, gee willikers," Herta said dryly, "I'm so stupid, I-"

"Give us the name," Pict growled. "This isn't a game, lass. A few hurt feelings are insignificant compared to the wound your associate could inflict if left unchecked."

Herta glared at him. "She isn't posing," Herta explained. "She is Mary."

        "What?" asked Pict.

"Mary never existed. Tallemaja manufactured a cover story and an entire identity. She didn't $&@%ing sneak in her: you invited her.

        "Now who's dumb?"

VIENNA: SKY (Kas and Harry; NPCs: Fey, Kiln, Nothing)
"I need to gather the fallen Vindicators and get them back to the school! Did you observe where the mage fled to?"

"Go!" Nothing shouted before dropping between the buildings.

Kas was able to gather up Fey and Kiln, and proceeded to make his way back to the school.

[Is it the mage's bookshop? Does anything about this seem off?]
The growing suspicion that Mary set this up to get Martin away from the school for some reason abated slightly upon seeing that Chuck has arranged for the transport.

"Okay, please just get me there as quickly as possible."

He felt...strange. Wrong. As if he hadn't just passed out, but that someone had forcibly taken control of his body. Which, he supposed, is more or less exactly what happened.

First thing, though. "Magnitude. Did I hurt anyone?"

              Something else came to him.

              "And was that flippin Paragon?"

Kas shook his head. "Nein. You injured nobody Knight. We are going to return to the school to have your injuries seen to though. Yours and Kiln's and Fey's."

                "Was that Paragon?"

"I have no idea who Paragon is, so you'll have to illuminate me. What I do know, is that he's helping. We need that since I can't locate Hubris or Backlash and Quintessence has probably already joined Pict at the academy."[COLOR="#800000"]

He shook his head some, still trying to make sense of what had happened. He had lost control of his mind, and someone else had taken over. But who else, exactly?

"Paragon...Dominique Infinity, he went to the school a few years back, I guess. Proper criminal-he takes what he wants and crushes anyone who tries to stop him. Not been seen for a while, and I heard he was dead. I guess not."

Why would Paragon of all people, be here helping them? It didn't make any sense.

                    VIENNA (Martin; NPCs: Driver)
It was the book store--the same store Martin had been to the day before: The Dust Jacket.

The next few minutes passed in silence. Soon, the car stopped outside of the store. "Do... you need me to wait?" the driver asked nervously.

NVAE, MAIN LEVEL (Lex and Violet; NPCs: Chuck, Fiore, Lexus)
Lex looked to Fiore. "Hey, man, can you gag him with a vine or something? Chucklehead here is supposed to be some kind of magic user. And I just don't like him."

"Absolutely," Fiore said, willing a vine to slither around Chuck's head and cover his mouth.

Violet looked at Lex. "What do we do with him?"

"We keep him here, like this," Fiore said, "and then we hand him over to the proper authorities. They'll call on us to testify against him at the world court. We'll all testify as to everything he confessed: that he's the mastermind--and I use the term loosely--of this attack, and he can test to see how well his wards hold up against sodomy."

Lexus stared at the Italian boy in wonder. "Damn," he said, slightly impressed. "That's cold."

"No," Fiore corrected, "it's protocol. Mario will bring back Mister McClanahan, who will contact whoever the Vindicators contact when they apprehend someone..."

Chuck squirmed and tried to be heard over his gag. "Be quiet," Fiore said, "or I'll reevaluate treating you humanely, and will settle for making a vine crawl down your throat."

VIENNA: SKY (Kas and Harry; NPCs: Fey, Kiln)
Flying in from the west, Kas could make out what looked to be a dragon sitting on the front lawn. It almost appeared docile, standing amongst Pict, Jack, and a few other students.

As Kas swooped in low, towing his precious cargo with him, he frowned at Harry's description of Dominique Infinity. A right-proper villain. Spectacular. To make matters worse, none of the missing Vindicators...Hubris, Backlash and Quintessence...were in the open where his senses could detect them.

"Damn! Harry, I'm going to drop you off on the parade grounds with Kiln and Fey. Tell everyone what happened and get the three of you some medical care. If Quintessence and the others are still missing, perhaps this Paragon person has something to do with it. I'm going to go back, find him and ask...politely of course."

The dragon was a bizarre addition, but maybe the Tharivols had a cousin he hadn't met visiting the school or something. One was a Rhino. One was an Elephant. One was a Slow Loris...poor kid. As far as he knew there wasn't a rule printed anywhere that said no member of the family could be a dragon.

Setting down on the grass, Kas shouted to Jack. "Take care of the injured! I'm going after Paragon!"

Not to mention a couple still active mages. One of whom had made mincemeat of the Vindicators. Still, the school was well protected. The city was still at the mercy of these villains.

Launching back into the air, he chuckled mirthlessly. "Once more into the breach."

She walks up to the front door and makes a gesture that Martin hopes will be taken as arcanish. S/he opens the door and inhales at the first outrush of air trying to get a sense of who is inside and where they are.

Jack grunted. "I'm willing to be he's made some kind of threat, too. I say we introduce the wizard to our dragon."

The dragon stirred them as Pict followed it's focus to the sky--to Magnitude's quick descent. With him were Blue Knight, Kiln, and Fey--all of whom looked to have been put through the wringer. "Take care of the injured!" Magnitude ordered, setting the trio on the law. "I'm going after Paragon!"

Pict's eyes flashed with fear. "Paragon?"

Mario was on them, eyeing the dragon strangely. "Uh, sir? We have one of the mages captured..."

Pict looked back to Magnitude, only to see the boy rising into the air. "He flies too fast for me to stop," Pict said. "Herta? I need you to follow Magnitude. If he encounters Paragon, stay out of sight. Paragon is super-strong, super-fast, and invulnerable, and he likes helpless girls."

                                "I'm not helpless," Herta spat.

"No, but for Paragon, that's half the fun. Just... please, stay back. If you can get to Magnitude before he finds Paragon, tell him to return to the school. Paragon's dangerous, and shouldn't be handled alone." He turned to the other students then. "Jack, Armande: you two take Harry, Mister Evans, and Miss O'Laughlin to get treatment. Once they've been dropped off, Armande should head for the Wreck Room. The students should be gathering there until Mister Ander can evacuate-"

"You want me to just cower while-"

"You single-handedly stood off against a large group of the students and kept going," Pict offered. "I consider you one of the more capable of the students, and recognize that you've improved in the short time you have been working with Kas' group. I'm not asking you to go there to keep you safe: I'm asking you to go make sure everyone else is. There is too much happening at once: mages, Laputa, and now Paragon--all at once. I cannot go to protect the students, so I am sending you in proxy. Do you understand?"

Armande nodded, but looked to Venefica.

"She will be fine," Pict said. "She'll be with me. Her powers can help to render the mage Fiore's group has taken down docile."

Pict looked to Jack then. "Once you have seen to getting the injured to Doctor Talley, you need to track down Tallemaja. Lax as I am to involve other students, Beatrice's powers may be able to help: she can cover her scent, but not her movements. When you find her, remember your last fight with her: physical attacks don't work, Jack. In order to beat her, you need to think outside of the box. You've got this, Jack. I believe in you. I trust you. Go."

Once the students were off, Pict had Mario lead himself, Venefica, and the dragon to where Fiore's group was.

NVAE, SUBLEVELS (Blue Knight and Jack; NPCs: Armande, Kiln, Fey)
Jack and Armande helped the wounded down to the sublevel, only to find the infirmary empty. "If the school was evacuated," Kiln said weakly, "Doctor Talley may be with them."

The Wreck Room was segmented: "There was a situation," Armande explained. "A group went to Romania--this girl manifested flight, but couldn't control it. Turns out there's this guy running around... They're calling him Voleur. He's a Frenchie who touches people, and copies their power... but then they lose control. This family of girls can't land so that he can turn himself into some sort of human bullet.

"He also got his hands on Viktor and Otso. Viktor can't stop moving--for days he's been unable to stop. They set up a room in the Wreck Room for him--a place that puts him on a track. It keeps him in one place, yeah, but... he's stuck there, just going in a circle. Otso, meanwhile, can't change out of his bear form. He's worried about his animal instincts taking over, and asked to be locked away. He won't let anyone in to see him."

It was all news to Jack and Harry: they had been in the other dimension when all this happened.

Magnitude stood on the sky high above Vienna. He was approximately where he had been when they defeated the monster Blue Knight had become--where they had been when Paragon left in pursuit of the transmuter. There was no sign of anyone here now: the people far below had fled in terror of the skeleton army that likewise had vanished.

Suddenly, he felt something below him: someone was on the roof of the tallest building, waving to him. It was Herta, the former pawn of Laputa, and current freshman at the school.

                                THE DUST JACKET (Martin)
"Stretch your arms above your head," Tallemaja said in Martin's ear.

Martin did as he was told, and then more commands cut across the communicator. "She says to go inside. She'll meet you soon."

Inside, Martin found himself the lone inhabitant of the book store.

"What's going on in the rest of the school?" Violet asked. She didn't take her eyes from Chuck, and watched as a confused look dawned over him. Why confusion? Why not rage, alarm, or frustration? What had happened to render him confused? "Did the Vindicators come back? How will we know when it's over?"

"Nothing's changed in the school since we were outside," Lex says, stuffing his hands in his pockets, grinning. "As for when it's over... It's over when we say it's over, ya know?"

The doors opened and Mario led Pict and Venefica in. Pict looked the scene over before nodding to the students. "Good job," he said. "I'm proud of you all. Venefica?"

The American girl stepped up to the man encased in ice. At her touch, his eyes rolled back into his skull, and a euphoric expression washed over him.

Pict cupped a hand over his ear. "This is Pict. Pangolin incandescent cello thirst. Several students have apprehended an enemy and are holding him in the corridor near the school's main entrance. The subject is a mage, and will need to be restrained and gagged." He looked to Violet. "Are you able to melt your ice on your own, or should I inform them that they'll need heating lamps?"

Once he had finished with his call, he looked over the students. "Here's the situation: legions of skeletons showed up in the city, and we responded to the distress call. When we arrived, Magnitude was already there, and deduced that the skeletons were meant to draw us away from the school. Quintessence opened a portal to send me back while he moved to retrieve Backlash and Hubris from the ground, leaving Kiln and Fey to work with Magnitude to suppress the skeletons. Quintessence never returned, which leads me to believe that something happened to him and the others.

"Jack and I learned that Tallemaja has been a student here all this time: Mary has been trying to revive Laputa inside the school, and may have tapped several students. I trust Rheid and Tantivy, but I'm not sure about the others." His eyes went to Lexus, evoking a sigh from the sophomore.

"I'm with you," Lexus said. "Sir Newton can confirm it: when Tallemaja approached me, I reported it straight to the headmaster. He asked me to act as a double agent. I... I was not aware Tallemaja was Mary, however."

Pict nodded in understanding. "She'll have help: Tantivy suggested Tallemaja has been winning favor with other students--students who were not previously affiliated with Laputa. She insinuated that Juozas, Ellen, Tatjana, and Otso may have been swayed. I don't want to begin pointing fingers and encourage infighting, but we should be wary of them, in the instance she is correct. Further more, Lacuna is back. Several of the guards attacked us, identifying as her. Jack was able to provide us with an opening, however: these seeds are not aware that Lacuna Prime--Elizabeth Lamperouge--died several months ago. If you encounter someone possessed by Lacuna, call them by name--call them Elizabeth--and bring up her death. The news of her demise will jar her, and give you some leverage.

"I believe Tallemaja is the true threat here: even if we best those who serve her, she can change her appearance, leave, only to return as someone else later on. She's dangerous, and we need to deal with her now. Jack is the only one of us who has fought Tallemaja before. Further, his abilities are as versatile as hers. If anyone is capable of beating her, it will be Jack. This is why I have tasked Jack with locating her, and bringing her down. Right now, he and Armande are transporting the injured...

"Kas returned to the school, carrying Blue Knight, Kiln, and Fey with him. They looked to be in terrible shape, and are being taken to the lower levels for treatment, at which point Armande will move to defend the students in the Wreck Room, while Jack searches for Tallemaja. Kas has returned to the city, citing another threat that has popped up. I sent Tantivy to back him up.

"At the present time, I'm forced to believe I am the last of the Vindicators. A group of mages, Laputa, and Paragon are all apparently attacking us simultaneously. I need help." Pict took a deep breath. "I'm sure this falls out of the purview of my authority, but I am officially deputizing anyone capable and willing as temporary Vindicators."

Lexus didn't even think about it: "I'm in," he said.

                                Fiore nodded glumly.

                                Venefica looked to the ground.

                                Mario shook his head sadly.
