As the stranger screamed, Otso switched his grip to be less painful but no less firm. When the man continued his stuttering spiel his words started to click together for him. His racing thoughts were interrupted by Jack's sudden arrival.

"Dad, look out!" Jack's warning spurred Otso to shift into bearform and knock his father down to shield him from the sniper.

Gwyn didn't blush, but it took a bit of effort on his part. This was tempting, tricky territory. "Somehow, I think I'd be a tad distracted. And in case yew didn't know, I'm kinda seeing someone. Pirjo? Tall girl, senior?"

It would not have surprised Gwyn if Rose had taken absolutely notice of Pirjo besides knowing what she looked like.

She tried to transmute it, only to watch as it resisted her dominion over matter. "Ze molecules of your construct defy direkt manipulation. 'Ave you ever 'ad someone moof zem or break zem? Do zey displace matter from ze surface you create zem from or are zey formed from it?"

"They can be broken," the admiral said cautiously, "but they're very resilient. When they do, they atomize--there is no trace left of them. They cannot be moved, however--but they do displace things..."

"Can you create zem from a metal surface unt from a lake?"

        "Well, there are limits."

Before Ganze could question it further, the Adversary asked one of his own: "I'm curious as to why an Admiral, one who seems fairly by the book, would be condemned to a place like this. Surely the Chinese wouldn't want to waste such a valuable resource?"

"The Chinese weren't the ones who did this," Chen Lei said. "My fleet was in the Pacific, coming towards the Sea of Okhotsk. We'd been out too long, and we were running low on food, medical supplies, munitions... The Russians were going to replenish our stores before we ran back out. Next thing you know, it's raining black and white: the Vindicators hit us full force. They must have sent in every single unit.

"My men and I took a few down with us, but ultimately... they brought me in. I don't know why they didn't kill me. They took me back to that tower of theirs, told me that I was guilty of crimes against the U.A. They told me I was going to be sentenced to Pandora. The Aurelius came forward, cast some spell on me, and the next thing I know, I'm here."

"Wait, so your world's left the Cold War and went into World War III?" Locus was surprised. "What a place to live in."

Suddenly, a lithe woman was draping herself over the Adversary. "I know, right? Can you imagine the battles we fought? What an age to be alive in."

The faintest of smiles touched the admiral's face. "Carolien," he said, "it's good to see that you survived." He stepped forward and pulled the woman into a hug.

"Aw, it's good to see you too, ya big softy."

Turning to the others with them, the admiral introduced the woman. "Back in our home world, this woman was a mercenary known as Anansi."

"Anansi, African trickster figure of folk zat takes ze form of a spider?" Ganze looked her over. "I vill guess enhanced strength and nimbleness. Ability to stick to walls and some mechanism, natural or created, to bind foes. Am I right?"

Carol gave Ganze an extravagant bow. "Got it in one Frau Doktor." Looking to Chen Lei, the woman asked, "So, what's the big plan here, chief?"

"The Adversary and Ganze will take inventory of the skills and abilities we have here. He catalogs the information while Ganze makes note of any needs they have. We have scouts looking into finding a water source. Once we have that, I might send you with this Caballero fellow to find a defensible site. I don't want to make assumptions that we're the only ones here, nor that we're the only ones who will arrive."
        ..
        The Adversary

How foolishly trusting this man was. "Works for me."

As Ganze slid down into the ground, he shrugged, thin shoulderblades sliding up like bridge supports. Not like he needed anyone's help keeping records. "Alright, ladies and gentlemen, gentleman and ladies, let's get this going. As the Good Admiral says, lets list our skills and preternatural abilities so we have an idea what we're all working with. As we seem to be under Jante law, or what I might call a 'No flex zone', lets keep this civil. I'll go first. I'm what's known as a Homo Novus where I come from-'New Man.' My powers let me process information at faster than normal speeds. So feel free to go ahead and rattle them off, quick as you like-I'll remember."

Considering the bit about skills, he tapped his collarbones idly with the thumb and middle finger of his right hand, a lively drumbeat. "I'm a superlative chemist and an accomplished architect as well, with some medical training."

He decided to keep the bit about enhanced physical abilities belied by his slight build to himself. What was life without mystery, he thought, waiting for the others to speak.

I'm uncertain where everybody is, in relation to each other, so I'm not sure who all is close enough to hear Jason, so we'll assume he's talking to anyone nearby but not shouting for all to hear.

Something about the questions and the lack of emotion rang alarm bells in Dennis' mind. The thrust of it was going somewhere suspicious. "The whole point of coming here was to find a place more preferable to me than back home. I'm satisfied with being here - anyway, it's not like I have any ability to leave this dimension - not under my control anyway. But if it happened: Jack, definitely. Harry's Welsh accent is something I'd remember fondly for being amusing and charming, even if I'd swear at times he makes some of those words up. Most of the others aren't too bad, but I've not really known them that long. Steven Murphy I will happily relinquish to the oblivion of Lethe though."

"Curiouser and curiouser," Lex said flatly as he pulled out his phone and looked up the word brooding.

He frowned. He wasn't brooding. He was god damned tired of all this #*$%. He put his phone away and wondered for a moment if Martin would get the quote. He didn't really seem like a Disney guy.

"Well, this is either a trap or a really stupid idea," Lex said with a sigh as he put away his music notes, "But that's never really stopped me before, has it?"

He didn't care if Gaspar hated him, he was going to watch his friend's back.

Because he did care. How much easier would his life have been if he could just sit back and say "oh well" or "somebody else's problem"? He went to jam his hands in his pockets and jerked awkwardly when he remembered that his Jacket wasn't there. It was back in Europe. With his depressed girlfriend who wouldn't even talk to him.

He sighed again and started walking slowly after Gaspar. It wasn't too terribly hard to follow the battery in his phone and getting to close was just going to result in a screaming match.

"I'll talk to him," Katrina said.

"Is there anyone else we can trust?" Dale asked, sweeping the field with his gaze. He stopped at the sight of Pyre. "What about him? He's one of the Vindicators."
Jack nodded to Katrina but shook his head quickly when his father mentioned the other world version of one of his teachers. "I fought him, long story. I say we keep the circle small, only people we know from our world."

She travels the distance before surfacing near a group who's voices she recognized. She was mildly perplexed and mildly amused at the same time. "SweetTart," she greets Katrina, looking the woman's attire over a glint of amusement in her eyes, "You are looking... dressed."

"Primal," she greets Dale with a small incline of her head before turning to Tabitha. "Mastermind." her German-accented voice contain obvious respect and deference. "Vhen I did not see ze rest uf you at my trial and sentencing I vas concerned you vere caught in ze island's explosion." She notes the other in their company, her back stiffens. "Unt your offspring, Greyskin. Ze dosier did say he vas ze most susceptible to anti-auzoritarian behavior. I just vish it had occurred before your role in my husband's destruction." her voice was a touch frosty.
When another world's Entier rose up from the ground amongst them, Jack couldn't help but take another step back. Instantly his mind drew a connection between the woman and his French classmate, then he heard a faint voice responding to what he was seeing and maybe thinking.

"Non, non, non, non, NON!" Martin cried out
Martin? What the hell man?! Between "talking" to the French Jiminy Cricket now in his head Jack only caught the tail end of not-Entier's statement. "Wasn't me lady, and we're not from your world."

PANDORA (Jack and Martin; NPCs: Dale, Ganze, Katrina, Tabitha)
The Laputa people eyed Ganze curiously, then watched as Jack sorted it all out. "You were part of a Laputa in another dimension?" Katrina asked. She looked about the gathered, half-expecting to see SweetTart.

Dale, meanwhile, looked suddenly defensive. Maybe it was what Jack had just said about only trusting those who hailed from their home dimension, but maybe it was something else... He and Katrina had done their best to keep Tabitha from learning that it was her daughter who had created Laputa, and they strove to keep it that way. If things happened similarly in Ganze's universe, she might be moments from spilling the beans...

"Must be an effect of being exiled to some other dimension," Dale said. "Hell, maybe it was something they did at the Hague." He looked down at his clothes. "It seems like they searched us for contraband. I don't have any of the stuff I was carrying when I was arrested."

It dawned on Jack that his father was right: his phone was gone, as was his lighter and cigarettes.

"They literally sent us in here with just the clothes on our backs. It wouldn't surprise me if they did some sort of... psychic scan." The man shrugged. "Oh, well. More important things to worry about now, right?"

PANDORA (Adversary, Anansi, Ganze, Locus; NPCs: Chen Lei)
Everyone came forward to tell the Adversary what their abilities and skills were. Some he realized could be extremely useful: Evan Bradley could generate flames; Cascade was hydrokinetic; Peter White's magic could be used to heal; Breeder could manipulate the size of animals. Some were useless: C.J. Amanchukwu was a cyberpath; Eidolon could fabricate non-auditory illusions.

Some of the condemned had abilities that would not lend themselves to helping Chen Lei create the civilization he imagined he was building. The Adversary could see no application for their abilities beyond combat: Womack, Paragon, Cleave, Phlegm, Brimstone...

As he finished, the scouts Chen Lei had sent out returned. They had found water. At Chen Lei's command, Locus began to move everyone to it, and the condemned began planning to build shelter.

VIENNA (Jack and Otso; NPCs: Ellen, Kowalski, ???)
Jack knocked the man to the ground. Otso had transformed. Flames were pouring from Ellen's eyes as she followed her boyfriend.

Everyone was fleeing from the café.

"Please!" the man begged. He was reaching for a phone that had been knocked from his grip. It was laying a few feet from where Jack had him pinned. "Let me go! He'll kill my daughter!"

Otso's father dropped to the ground and crawled to the device. Picking it up, he froze at whatever he saw on the screen. The young heroes didn't have to ask what he'd seen: he soon turned it around to show them the dimly lit room and the young child--a hood over their head--tied to a chair.

"Who did this?" Kowalski asked. "Who put you up to this?"

"I don't know," the man sobbed. "He told me if I didn't do what he said, he'd kill her!"

                      NVAE, LIBRARY (Harry; NPCs: Rose)
"Somehow, I think I'd be a tad distracted. And in case yew didn't know, I'm kinda seeing someone. Pirjo? Tall girl, senior?"

                      "Terrorist," Rose added.

NVAE, YAVORSHAK'S OFFICE (Dennis; NPCs: Yavorshak)
She didn't look convinced, Dennis thought.

"From what I read, you didn't choose to leave your home dimension. You couldn't. When the Drifter first visited this campus, there was a student who didn't want to go, but the Astrolabe took them. This last time, there were students who didn't want to go--students who knew what was about to happen. Further, given the report of their first trip, I would wager there were one or two natives of that dimension who wouldn't have mind crossing over, but weren't allowed to.

"My point is, everything we know about the Drifter and the Astrolabe--which is very little--suggests that it makes the decision who it brings along for the ride. It occurs to me that if we're all subservient to this bauble the Drifter escorts from world to world, then one of three things happened: either it read the desire to leave in you and obliged you, it decided to bring you here and you just happened to be okay with that, or it brought you along and you've decided to make peace with that because you realize that it is beyond your power to do anything about it.

"My concern is that the latter has transpired: that you feel powerless in the face of such entities and that you're subconsciously terrified of being ripped from this world next. You've been here a month and when asked about relationships, you give me three names--one of which is negative."

And there it was, Dennis realized: she thought he was holding back out of fear that he would be displaced again.

                      NVAE (Violet)
"Sure," Jakob texted. "Mom n mat r coming 2. Want 2 go w/ all or just us"

                      NVAA, HALL (Lex; NPCs: Gaspar)
Lex followed Gaspar down the hall. The Spaniard stopped at the main entrance and took his shoes out of his locker. It was raining outside now--storming, by the sound of it on the skylight. Gaspar grabbed someone's umbrella from the rack and headed out into the storm.

                      NVAA (Martin)
Martin watched as Lex headed off after Gaspar.

"You and me boz." Mart said. "I seem to be a remnant wizout connection to ze Martin back on our world. I'm certain I do not possess a full set of memories, but I cannot tell you what is lacking. I do not seem to possess enough control or mass to affect changes at ze molecular level as I am used to so my capacity seems to be in an advisory role only. Given a decreased capacity and for ease of keeping zings strait in conversation I recommend you refer to me as 'Mart'."
There's a pause. "I should also keep zese short as it seems to be taxing on my cellular network. But I'm really curious what happened to Ganze's Martin."

                                "Terrorist," Rose added.

Gwyn almost sighed, but he realized the kind of person he was dealing with and pushed forward. If he could handle Agammenon Rex, he could handle Rose. "Ex-terrorist, ya?"

He shrugged. "Besides, I don't know why yew'd be interested in somebody like me, anyway. I'm sure you could do better..."

Gwyn trailed off and tried to look mildly unhappy with himself. It helped that he was wearing shades.
