    A Time of Misfortune

The War of the Clans was a disaster by any sane definition. Nothing in history had prepared the people for the intensity or the length of the conflict. It was as if all the tensions had built up for centuries and escaped all at one time. Entire families disappeared, wiped from the face of the lands, their ancestors forgotten, no one left to pay the proper respects. Wu shu techniques never before seen let loose leaving few survivors behind. Oni were freed, let loose of the strong bonds as the wizards were distracted or murdered. Trust between the villagers and those that had protected them shattered.

Until one man rose from the shadows, a commoner that had been raised to nobility, Three Thunder Dragons. The kindness had long been burnt from him, but wisdom and balance had been left in its place. For ten years of righteous rule, he made life better for his subjects. Public works to improve the lot of all and instituting proper justice. No effort would have been enough but his hand was felt. A son was born, a promise to the next generation that things would be better. A new Dynasty.

Promises can only be kept by a living man, Three Thunder Dragons, after so many years of turmoil and strife was to die of very natural causes. His young son, Brilliant Eagle, was only ten. So much burden placed upon such young shoulders. The Emperors' advisers have taken it upon themselves to guide the young man towards proper rule. For a time, the age of rejuvenation continued but most recently, the great works have taken a darker turn- taxes raised, corruption flourishing. Dark things lurk in the night. Have the Heavens turned their back upon us all?

    Three Rivers

The town of Three Rivers was a small spot of peace within the land of turmoil and misery.

Once, there was an ordered bureaucracy, small but efficient.
Once, there was wealth, a busy crossroads where three rivers came together.
Once, there was opportunity, a place where refugees could come and make a new life. There was even a small school for the children.

Now, all of that has been unsettled. Too many people have come too quickly, the local resources overburden and tipping over with the added weight. It is a place where crime flourishes, the rivers bringing foul corruption instead of riches.

It is still filled with opportunity, for the very strong, and misery, for everyone else.

As of late, you have been traveling with Lady Akime at her pleasure. It has been your task to mask the old hag with the guise of a princess. It is a painful job, full of misery and hardship, but also one that pays rather well. Once this current appointment ends, if you manage to survive that long, you will be able to work upon your own without distractions for quite a while. Odd how it happens that so often, even when your pockets are full of gold one day, they are often empty the next and some rude lout is asking for more. How odd.

The most recent leg of your travels with the *shudder* Lady Akime is to the town of Three Rivers. You have heard talk of such a city, full of bright young people- perhaps even some that could appreciate your wisdom. Unlikely, but there is that potential, however small.

Today, you are most fortune to have the opportunity to listen to the woes of the Lady, coo over the vicious rodent she calls a lap dog and most importantly rest your weary feet. The caravan is brought to a halt, earlier than you would expect for the time of day. Even with your sharp ears, you can just barely catch the sound of the guard's soft voices.

It is a quiet moment. No one who knows who you are knows where you are. It's almost relaxing.

        *CRASH*

Well, if the drunken idiots around you would stop fighting that is.

        *SHATTER*

Madame Yang's Peaceful Paradise was a quaint little teashop in days gone by. If you look at the walls hard enough you can even find faint hints of the elegant peach tree paintings on the scuzzy walls. Lately, it's collected a far more.. energetic? clientelle, people looking to get drunk, people to get in a fight, and people to get into a drunken fight.

Still serves a fine cup of tea though if you think to ask.

One thick drunken lout throws another fat drunken lout across the room, through your table and nearly into your lap.

Pigface looks up with an oink of shock, "Maybe later I'll show you my collection of scars, cutie!" and starts to run back into the thick of the fight.

You thought that you had found a nice quiet place away from that dung heap downriver to take a rest. It was warm, it was surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature and you thought that you were far enough away from the road that noone would bother you.

Sadly, that was not to be.

Through your drowsy mind, you first hear the sound of footsteps- many of them. Eight? No ten. Men smelling of honest sweat. Armor oil. Eaugh- what is That stench? A perfume covered corpse?

The footsteps come closer, down the road that you realize is too close for you to sleep comfortably.

The search for a band of good men has brought you to Three Rivers. The local magistrate, Iron Panther (Tie Bao) is said to be beyond reproach, kind and yet strict, a proper guide to the local people. Well, that is the story that the peasantry tell. In your lofty position, you have heard stories of his gross misconduct and unfair practices among your social equals. There has even been talk of him being shamefully dismissed from his position. In either case, its a start however shallow. He shall either prove to be one of the heroes that you seek or a wrong to be corrected.

You are about to approach the busy outskirts of the outskirts of the town (different direction from the rest of the group), the town having burst past its gated walls in recent years. Animals and children run rampantly through the dirt paths, the stench of unwashed bodies and unwholesome food pollute the air.

Could such a hero live here?

              Quiet Sister Pan Shan-Lee
HP: 1 LP: 2 Condition: Fine

Quiet Sister took another sip of her tea as the room continued to boil at the slow simmer that seems to be the normal these days at Madame Yang's Peaceful Paradise. No one seemed to recognize her which was a relief since she made absolutely no effort to disguise who she really was. There was no hat to hide her distinctive hair and no new robes to hide her distinctive killing leathers. The Silent Sisters were even sitting out in the open on the table, right next to her tea.

"This whole room is one giant temptation!" Darkness Crane Okada's smile spread across his face from his seat right across from her. "It's almost like you're looking for some drunk idiot to cause an offence just to give you leave to take his life."

She didn't answer him as she took another sip but that only seemed to spur the young man on further. "There was a time where the great Quiet Sister didn't need to have a reason. There was a time where the both of us would paint the walls of this teahouse red."

"There was a time..." She answered with a whisper drawing a funny look from the young girl refilling her cup of tea.

"Ma'am..." The girl said before Quiet Sister waved her away and the young girl fled.

"We could turn this into another Lucky Wedding like the one we performed for that foolish magistrate in Bao Jiang." Okada leaned back on his arms and tilted his head like he was searching the heavens for a happy memory. "You cut Lou Gar Leung to ribbons. You were so beautiful standing above him, your skin covered in his blood, your hand wrapped around the throat of his young country bride. That was the moment..."

"Please stop..." Quiet Sister pleaded with a whisper as she caressed the still painful wound in her side where his spear had come perilously close to taking her life.

"That was the moment when I knew that I wanted to marry you."

A single tear fell from her eye as the table suddenly jolted sending her tea cup spinning to the place on the floor where it shattered. She looked up and the ghost of the Darkness Crane was gone from her table and in his place was just a man. A very drunk man.

The man was nothing and didn't deserve the honor that a death by her hands would bestow upon him. She told herself that but it had the stink of a lie from the start. Every instinct in her body demanded that she rise from her seat and slit his throat to leave him bleeding to death on the floor of this filthy teahouse. Ever instinct in her body demanded that she rise from her seat and kill them all. To flow through this dump like water down a stream leaving behind nothing but crimson waves of death in her wake. She fought against every instinct in her body and kept her seat while the young girl replaced her cup and poured her another cup of tea.

"I hope that Pig of a man realizes that every moment forward in his worthless life is nothing but a gift from you to him." Okada's voice echoed from behind her like a whisper on the wind but when she turned to look his ghost wasn't there. "Everyone here owes you their life. I hope I'm there when you decide to finally collect on all these debts."

Wen slowly approached the town of Three Rivers. He had expected something grander somehow. The stench of the animals, unwashed bodies, the general filth of the area, and the gods only knew what else assaulted his nostrils. In response, he slowed his breathing thus reducing his intake of the putrid scent.

After walking perhaps another half mile, he stopped and spoke with a peasant.

"I wish an audience with Iron Panther. Where might I find him?"

Gao Lao had found himself a quiet little glade in a little cluster of trees near one of the rivers. He had fell asleep listening to the flow of the water and the song of the birds. The town had been an awful canopy of noise and stench.

He was awoken by the sound of marching feet. It sounded like it was about 10, but there were some rumbling in the background so they might have some kind of wagon.

What time of day was it? Was it even day?
He could feel sunlight on his skin so day. Had it been day when he lay down to rest? He had forgotten to check the shadows when he lay down so he had no idea how long he had slept.

He was just about to lay down to sleep some more when he was hid by a truly awful smell. it smelled like rotting flesh left too long in the sun and it jolted him fully awake

Then he heard some of the men talking
"It doesn't look like the stories. Do you think it's safe?"
"Do you think that it's safe stopping here to ask that question?"

He could not resist trying to help the poor men so he spoke loudly and hoped they would hear it clearly. Little did he know that he was actually hidden from the road where he was laying
"Safe? Is anywhere safe these days?
If you ask any of the guards in town they will tell you that it is as safe as can be and that they have full control over anything that goes on inside the town limit.
That is a lie and you can almost hear it in their voice that they don't believe it either, so i suspect they have been told to say that from their superiors."

He took a steady breath and continued

"If you really need to go into town i would advice that you try and look as intimidating and professional as possible. It also helps if it does not appear as if you have nothing worth stealing with you.
Personally i would advice you to try and go around the town if possible and if you need anything from there i would send in only 2-3 people and keep the rest to watch over your cargo outside.
Sadly it smells like your food is spoiled so you will probably have to buy more in town, which is sold at incredulous prices"

"The good news is that there is plenty of dung-heaps where you can get rid of that smelly rotten sack you transport around, in town"

                    Tao and Xian Wu Long

“If you meet the Buddha, kill him.”– Linji

The road has been long and dusty. You walk it alone though there are others that walk it beside you. They are an illusion, for you are alone. Being alone is an illusion, for all are one.

For both of you, Three Rivers is a spot along the path, a stone in the river of your journeys. There are good people here, but there is also corruption, a disease that must be excised. You have heard of this Iron Panther, a hero among the commoners and a scoundrel among the nobles. If you come as a friend, then he may offer you guidance along the way. As an enemy, then you would be lucky to not come across him.

In the distance, the hard galloping of a panicked horse charges towards the city, a wild run down the dusty path. There is not the usual sound of a rider urging his steed on with haste.

As the horse arrives, it is a beautiful creature, if not the mount of a noble than one of a hero. Upon it's back is a prone body, tied down harshly against its back to keep from falling off.

More details available if you interact with the mount.

Humans, no matter their attempts to think of themselves as other or better, are little more than animals. In forgetting their nature, they may even stand as worse. The stench in Three Rivers is a reminder of that. There is predator and prey, a natural order of who feeds upon another. In the end, even the greatest leaves behind a body for their lessers to feed upon.

Three Rivers is home to many sheep, picking their way among the remains left behind, scraping by but continually hungry. So vulnerable to any that would take their lives.
Some fancy themselves hyenas, hunting among the weak and taking of them as they will.
So few of them are loyal dogs, serving their masters in return for scraps from the table.
You, and few others are wolves, the top predators, taking as you will when you will.

Then there is Iron Panther though, a wolf who thinks himself a dog, standing out from the crowd and seeking to protect the sheep. You have seen the look in his eyes, there is wolf there, hungry and powerful. He is a lawman, a magistrate, a protector of the weak. You have spoken with him in the teahouse, a rare equal in your talents. Darkness Crane has said that Iron Panther is yours to remove as you will. It is likely that Iron Panther thinks the same of you.

You know that he went out a few days ago, investigating some matter of importance to him, but he has not yet returned to give you the amiable glare. He should be back by now.

In speaking with the peasant, you have challenged the proper barriers that exist between the classes. As long as neither of you 'notice' each other, no effort is needed. But now, your words cause an immediate drop to one knee. The accent is rough, crude, uneducated, "Many apologies Master, I shall seek to find him for you now." and hopefully live for another day rather than incurring your wrath for not knowing such a thing.

A heartbeat, another.. is the peasant given leave to go to the duty that you have laid before him?

The coins made a sharp crack as she dropped them into the empty cup on her table and then rose to her feet. The Silent Sisters were instantly hidden somewhere on her person and Quiet Sister headed towards the nearest exit of the teahouse. The eyes of anyone with half a brain were on her as she left. "Their eyes are filled with such sadness." Darkness Crane cooed into her ear as he pointed them out and the two young lovers left the establishment. "You're the only reason they were here. Like vultures circling just praying that the lioness would leave some carrion behind in her wake."

She made a mental note of the men who seemed to pay special attention to her before she planted a foot on a bit of small fence and used it to launch herself up to a higher hand hold and then another until she was on the roof of the Teahouse. "Now that you're gone the rowdy crowd has probably already started to leave the Teahouse." Crane said as he waited for her on the roofs peak. "I don't understand why the great protector, Iron Panther, puts up with your being in his lovely little riverside town."

"Shut up." Quiet Sister said as she began to traverse the town from rooftop to rooftop. Darkness Crane was always waiting for her on the next roof.

He sighed. "You're bringing nothing but trouble here. People are dying all around you and you're not even part of the party. He's eventually going to have to put a stop to that."

"I'm not doing anything." She spoke as her hand found the wound that still wouldn't quite heal. Their eyes meeting. "Iron Panther granted me refuge here while I healed. I swore to him that I would not start any trouble in his town."

Darkness Crane laughed as he stepped close behind her, placing his body against hers. "You've kept your promise but you carry a touch of chaos with you wherever you go Quiet Sister Pan Shan-Lee, and it's just that touch that causes men of a certain type to circle like sharks with blood in the water." He laid his hand on her side, just below the ribs, right where his spear had pierced flesh almost caressing the wound. The wound that wouldn't heal.

"I should leave." She said finally. "I need to thank Iron Panther. I owe him a debt for the kindness that he's paid me." She turned, almost pulling away from him but the ghost of Darkness Crane was no longer there. For a few moments she had forgotten that it wasn't actually him. Wiping tears away from her eyes she took off across the town in search of word of Iron Panthers return.
