  • [3e OOC] Stronghold [OOC]

This is the Recruitment thread for an epic-level superheroes campaign featuring a team of original PC-heroes who are their Earth's Avengers/Justice League.

    PL/PP: 14/210 (max. trade-offs; +/-5)

Type: Campaign (12 adventures with possible 'between adventure-Mini-sessions')

    Setting: Group-created Earth/Multiverse, probably early-21st century

    Scale: Multiversal

    Tone: Light-Gray

Number of Players: 8+ (I'm okay with alternates who make cameo appearance)

Dice Roller: Invisible Castle or any other that records rolls. I prefer doing ALL the rolls for expediency, but if someone would rather do their own, let me know

Prohibited Races: None I can think of

Prohibited Powers: Precognition, Reality Control, Mind Control, Summon (unlimited), Vampirism, Healing (unlimited), Necromancy, Regeneration (has to fit the power-set & have reasonable ranks), Immunity to Ranged/Close Attacks, certain Reaction-based powers, Time-travel (unlimited), plus any possible game-smashing powers will be approved case-by-case

A note of Power-creation: this his how they should look; (Power's name): (Effect & rank); (descriptor; modifiers, flaws, player notes). For example; Eye Beam: Damage 14; solar; ranged, multiattack, distracting

Alignment: Think "Lawful Good & Neutral Good"; no solo operators or anti-heroes. Your PCs should enjoy working with a team of like-minded individuals. Torture & Killing are frowned-upon actions that may lead to later 'complications'

    House-Rules:
    1. 4 Skill ranks for 1 power point, but only if you spend at least 15pp
    2. The 'Impervious' modifier limited to defense rank
    3. Each rank of Presence confers 1 social-type Advantage as a bonus
    4. Language is a Skill w/ 1 rank per language
    5. 2nd Ed. Natural Healing vs. 3rd Ed. Recovery is on the table for discussion
    6. Players taking "Motivation: Responsibility" or "Complication: Power Loss/Weakness" get an additional 5pp per (+15pp total by taking each one)
    7. Dayglow uniforms and always bringing the machine that goes "PING!" is also on the table. Somewhere

PC Backstory: More important than stats. These heroes are the epic equivalents to Superman, Captain America, Batman, Wolverine, Hellboy, Ellen Ripley, Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Luke Skywalker, Dr. Who, Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, ect! The usual 'fluff' will not do. Miniskirt-ish: long enough for a proper history, short enough to keep my attention

Sourcebooks: The Mutants & Masterminds Hero's Handbook & DC Adventures. Anything else is approved case-by-case (especially the Power Profiles)

Posting Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday & no weekends (Saturday & Sunday)

    Freebies:
    • All PCs get "Complication: Fame & Enemy (Arch-Nemesis) & Identity (whether secret or public)"
    • The group will design their team headquarters(es), team vehicles, team tech, team bowling shirts, ect. Each player should contribute power points into a pool that forms your "Team EP Pool" (5 ep per 1pp) for building team-only toys. I'm contributing a bonus 60 eps to that pool. Sidebar: seems the richest heroes usually end up bank-rolling the team, but I'll let players work it out

    Game Elements: Action/Combat, RP/social-interaction, Investigation/Mystery, skill challenges

    Recruitment Period: 2-3 weeks, easy

Tried to cover as much as possible up-front. There's good interest, as the polls demonstrated, so: let's do this!

Pitch concepts, stats, backstories, questions, ect. here and I'm considering each interested player as a mini-GM since the setting is very much a group-project. That said, you can PM me with any special questions.

I'll have more on my ideas for the setting as we go. Thank you everyone for your interest and right now, more coffee

Sch-wheet! Going to have something up before EOD (and knowing how fast these boards fill up, that might not be fast enough).

In regards to the 4 Skill ranks for 1 power point, but only if you spend at least 15pp will that include ranks for Close/Ranged Combat?
    Eppur si muove

          Complications
Enemy - Archon: The intergalactic tyrant Archon, Lord-Dominar of the Taas, seeks to reclaim the Starstorm Entity and use its power to conquer the known universe. He has threatened the Earth on numerous occasions and will stop at nothing to possess Starstorm's power for himself.
Fame: Starstorm is one of the most well known heroes in the world, and has saved the planet more than once.
Identity: Starstorm's previous identity of Officer Alex Reyes is a matter of public knowledge.
Motivation: Responsibility: Bearing the potentially limitless power of the Entity is a responsibility that drives Starstorm. Using the powers of the Starstorm in the name of justice and the greater good is one of the few remaining tethers to his past life, and something that Starstorm prizes above almost anything else.
Power Loss: While no longer requiring food, water, or sleep, Starstorm "feeds" on cosmic radiation such as gamma rays, and x-rays. If deprived of these energies for prolonged periods, Starstorm will begin to weaken, losing ranks of his powers until potentially reaching human levels.
There is only Starstorm: Years of being bonded to the Starstorm entity has all but stripped Alex Reyes of his humanity. His memories of his life before fusing with the cosmic being have become faint, and Starstorm secretly fears what he may eventually become.

          Languages
          Native Language

          Defense
Dodge 11, Parry 11, Fortitude Immune, Toughness 15, Will 12

          Power Points
          Abilities 38 + Powers 137 + Advantages 7 + Skills 15 (59 ranks) + Defenses 23 = 220

The Starstorm Entity is a sentient form of energy that has existed for millenia. Countless cultures and societies have given names to the Entity as it drifted through the cosmos, and many have sought to harness its near limitless power for their own purposes. Worshiped as a god, desired as a weapon, and feared as a force of nearly limitless destruction, the Starstorm Entity eventually became the target of the galaxy conquering tyrant known as Archon, the Lord-Dominar of the ruthless Taas Empire. Tracking the Entity across the stars, Archon captured the Entity within a crystalline prison and attempted to siphon its powers to give himself nearly godlike power. Before the tyrant completed his plan however, a rebellious servant stole the crystalline prison, and jettisoned it into space, hoping to put it beyond the reach of Archon and the Taas. The crystal eventually found its way to the distant and primitive world of Earth (because of COURSE IT DID :P)

Police Officer Alexander Reyes was camping in the deserts outside Santa Fe when a star seemed to fall to Earth. Investigating the crater, he discovered the crystal containing the Starstorm Entity. Weakened from its imprisonment, the Entity called out to Alex, warning him that "Archon is coming". Deprived of much of its native power and desperate to evade Archon's clutches, the Entity sought Alex as its host. In a surge of cosmic energy, the Entity joined with Alex, fusing the two beings into a gestalt that now simply called itself Starstorm. Alex used his new-found powers to fight crime in his native Santa Fe until the day came when Archon came seeking his stolen prize. Archon brought his entire Taas armada against Earth, threatening to eradicate all mankind unless the Entity was returned to him. Joining forces with other heroes from Earth, Starstorm battled the tyrant and succeeded in defeating him, driving him back into the darkness of space.

As the years continued however, Starstorm began to find himself less and less connected to his human side. The ability to fly, unaided through the depths of space left him feeling confined to Earth and he would spent long stretches of time exploring cosmos. What remained of Alex Reyes always brought him back to Earth however, and he still considers the small blue planet to be his home. His identity as a hero, and a champion of justice is now almost all that remains of the man who first joined with the Entity, and Starstorm is committed to never losing that last piece of himself.

I'm certainly interested in this game.

How much are you planning things like big space stories? Just want to create a character that can function in the right environment.

Considering a Captain America, Wonder Man mix with leadership powers

Great hero! I have a concern about Impervious and limiting it to its designated Defense rank, in this case Toughness. That's added to the House Rule discussion-list above. Overall, I like Starstorm, although he seems light Skills-wise. If he's lost all of his cop-related skills, I'd at least consider some kind of "Expertise: Stellar Cartography" skill gained from deep-space exploration. Don't forget the added complications above and great start

Space plays a big role, as will be seen in the initial adventure.

As stated in the 2E & 3E Poll, I plan on submitting a paragon of sorts. Though I was curious, at PL 14, I figure a Toughness shifted paragon would be hitting Toughness of 20, now if I went Impervious of the same level & we were doing 2E Impervious that would be a little crazy! Now, I plan on limiting the Impervious to Physical Damage only, really I only want it so I can ignore guns & most conventional weaponry for the classic Superman interpose scenario.

Obviously background & Personality forthcoming, but I have some company coming over, so I won't be posting anything until tomorrow. Looks like fun Dream, hoping I can be a part of it.

Yeah. I'll probably just go with the 3rd Edition Impervious. Looking forward seeing to your hero, PG.

At Toughness 20, you can already ignore Damage 6 and less except on a roll of a natural 1 without any ranks of Impervious. That covers everything in the equipment section of the main book weaker than a rocket launcher.

Nice to see this thread up.

I am definitely interested in a detective of sorts. Working out the powers.

Edit: I am thinking a sort of Mistique style morph. I will need to get down and dirty and read my books on it to see if that is what I want. Much more familiar with 2e than 3.

Cool. Yeah to be honest I thought of the cop thing after I built the character and then realized I was out of points. :P. Fortunately, your suggestion to lower Impervious to meet the Defense Rank freed up a couple PP and I made a few other tweaks to round out the character, and give him a bit more in the skills department. I'll be posting an updated (and likely final) version of Starstorm, including the added complications, shortly.

Big fan of Mystique, myself. 3rd isn't that much different, as I'm sure you know.

lol Damnit, you said Epic Level, and I flashed back to D&D 3.5 and now I'm drooling over the idea of lvl 21+ M&M characters :P

Interested, of course. As stated in the other thread, I think I'll finally have another game to submit Exemplar to.
The background was tailored to another game so some changes will have to be made, but..

His powers will include Regeneration, and the ability to sense, analyze, and drain meta-human powers. He also is at the peak of human condition, which many believe to be part of his 'super powers'. In reality, he didn't START as a super human. Unknown to him (And most people), his squad were secretly being experimented on by the CIA with a serum designed to create super-soldiers specifically to track and kill other Supers (hence his power-set). Unfortunately, after the ambush there was no way of knowing what the success rate was, or if there were any side effects on the others, since even the two he had dragged to safety ended up dieing in the hospital.Afterwards, Isaiahwas too public of a figure for them to do any follow up. I'd leave it up to you whether they tried again or not, since Isaiah doesn't even know what happened (yet?)

Born September 11, 1971, Isaiah Drake worked hard to get good grades in school while still exercising his love of football. Eventually however, it was his physical prowess rather than his intellectual diligence that landed him a scholarship to Yale, where he studied law while being the ivy league football MVP 7 years running. During his time at Yale, he became very active in civil rights, and by the time he passed his bar exam in 1998 at the age of 27, he moved on to become a civil rights attorney until disaster struck three years later.
On September 11, 2001, Isaiah's 30th birthday, terror reigned from the skies as the world trade center was destroyed. The next day, thousands flocked to enroll in the army, and Isaiah was one of them.
As with all things he set his mind to, Isaiah excelled in the military, earning commendation after reward as an army ranger, leading his team as adeptly on the field of battle as he had on the football fields back home.

During an ambush in 2006, his squad was nearly destroyed, Isaiah taking several bullets but still managing to carry the last two members of his squad to safety. Something had happened to him, though. As the doctors pulled the bullets out, the wounds began to heal of their own accord.. the stress of the incident had apparently awakened latent metahuman abilities in him. Over the next few weeks, he also began to notice other effects. It was difficult to tell at first, but he eventually realized that the strange tingling sensations he'd been feeling since the attack were him sensing other metahumans.

After returning from his final tour in 2007, Isaiah returned to civil rights law and began getting more involved in politics, fighting for the empowered. He became the focus of an anti-Meta political activist group who tried to make an example of him. They alternately attempted to force him to pay back his scholarship, get his law degree revoked and have him disbarred, and have him dishonorably discharged from the military and his medals and commendations stripped. In all cases, they cited that as a 'demi-human', he could have had unfair advantages over 'normal folk'.
The government was quick to shut down the talk about a discharge. As much as they were willing to go along with the anti-empowered attitude sweeping the nation, they were NOT willing to be the only military on earth without super-soldiers.
The other attacks, however, Isaiah was forced to deal with himself, spearheading a massive civil rights lawsuit that he finally won, setting a precedent to help protect all empowered individuals rights.
