"Hah!" laughs Jade Dragon as the alien amazon lunges for him. "With my bronze-skin-iron-bones technique, I am impervious to even your superhuman -- owowowowOWOWOW!" he squeals as Qora very nearly twists his arm off in the process of prying Zhang from his grasp, then attempts to stomp on her toes in retaliation.

"You would save him, alien? Even you, Nightbird?" White Rose sneers. Her hands form an arcane sigil, and the boy's shape blurs and shifts. "Then behold the ugly truth of Shambhala," she screams. "A LEMURIAN! Ancient enemy of humankind!"

Zhang's figure morphs before your eyes into the sinuous, scaled form of one of the Serpent People. A young Lemurian. Judging by the stature, still a child -- but Lemurian nonetheless.

"You see, 'Champions'," cackles the old Chinese man, carefully uncorking the massive gourd on his back. A sickly sweet scent seeps from it, rapidly filling the room with noxious fumes. "Once, Shambhala was a place of learning and wisdom. But it made the mistake of opening its gates to the Serpent People -- welcoming those Lemurians who survived the war with Atlantis and the degeneracy of their race!"

"Now these ancient foes of humankind plot to destroy it from within," whispers the handsome Japanese man in blue, as he plants a hand on the hilt of his katana. "I, the Sword-Saint of the East, will not stand for this travesty!" The blade flashes out at Qora, and in that instant Sparky screams of abnormal energy fluctuations surrounding the apparently ordinary steel blade.

"We saw through the politics and the petty squabbles of Shambhala's factions," says the young woman in flowing red robes, as she dances between Qora and the heroes. "When the Lemurian faction argued for inaction throughout the Cold War and beyond, we and Killpatrick left Shambhala to right the wrongs of the human world. Alas, he got distracted by a pretty flower in the streets!" she takes a deep breath, and breathes a torrent of flame at the heroes. The splinters of the broken door spontaneously combust as a cone of fire roars out at the gathered Champions.

"No!" hisses the boy -- the Lemurian. "Hear me out. Father and I are unlike others of our kind! We seek only peace! You must believe me!"

      OOC

Jade Dragon is lucky and rolls high. He fails toughness by 1 degree.

While he passes the str check, he does not have the feat that lets him grapple with one hand. After some thought I will not allow him to resist a grab check, since he should not be able to wrestle effectively using only one hand (holding Zhang with the other). So Qora wins the grab, and as Zhang does not resist you, you end Jade Dragon's grapple on Zhang and are now grabbing him.

Jade Dragon is too hot-headed to disengage from a big blue Amazon. He immediately uses his unarmed attack on Qora and hits: DC 27 Toughness check.

White Rose uses a prepared Ritual on Zhang Chongren as a standard action, dispelling his Metamorph power.

Old Master Qian uses Beguiling Mist and places a persistent cloud area that completely fills the interior of the apartment. It is also Selective, and he excludes all the villains and Zhang from it. Those within or entering the room must make a DC 18 Dodge save to avoid the effect by holding your breath, and if you fail, a DC 18 Will save vs Affliction: Dazed + Impaired + Hindered. This affliction has 1 degree only. Those with Life support or Immunity to suffocation are immune.

The Sword-Saint of the East uses Iaijutsu on Qora but auto-misses with a 1 on the die.

Scarlet Blossom uses Fire Breath on the heroes at the door, and catches all of you except Qora in the cone blast. Moonlight, Gelert, Kisai and Nightbird should make a DC 20 Dodge save for half effect, then DC 25/20 Toughness save vs damage.

        Expertise: Arcane Lore +12

Millions of years ago, intelligent life evolved on Earth— not early hominids, but the Serpent People. The pinnacle of saurian evolution, the Serpent People walked erect and built a civilization when humanity’s earliest ancestors scurried underfoot to avoid the predators of a savage and primitive world.

Serpent People society eventually fell into decadence and decay. They were impossibly ancient by the time the first human civilizations arose, and conflict between humans and Serpent People was inevitable. Humans founded the island nation of Atlantis, which quickly rivaled the Serpent Empire of Lemuria in both technology and magical power. The two nations fought a series of wars, ending in the destruction of both and the sinking of Atlantis and Lemuria in the Great Cataclysm.

The Serpent People were driven underground and into other dimensions by the sinking of Lemuria. Legends tell of encounters with snake-men and serpentine sorcerors, including the Cult of Set in ancient Egypt and followers of the Endbringer, and they are often described as pitiless creatures without morals, merely a need to satisfy their cold curiosity and a desire to control their environment.

Feeling the mist attack through the air before it even came close to her, Aranel held her breath, only lamenting she couldn't taunt Jade Dragon about burning him again now. Unfortunately, her reflexive use of an earth barrier against the flame allowed some of them to get superheated and burn her arms.

Imogen was already moving when Moonlight shattered the door avoiding the blast of flame and even the revelation that the boy was a snakeman didn't distract her from holding her breath.

The only thing that mattered at this point in time was White Rose and wiping that smirk off the older woman's face.

Even in the confined space of the apartment Imogen was able to push herself off the wall flipping as though to kick the fire breather before aiming a couple of rapid jabs into the stomach of White Rose.

Holding his breath before the gas encompasses him, the fire breath still catches him a bit leaving him dazed.

"Epic Mistake," Kisai growls out, giving a little bit of the precious air in his lungs. "Qora, get him out of here. Everyone else, stomp these losers into paste."

Philip then sets his stance, expecting a bit of retaliation from the White Rose's minions.

"Lemurians are as icy and pitiless as their cold-blooded ancestors," White Rose says in response to Qora's accusation. "They heartlessly use their own kind - even children. Why do you think he is doing here, alone? Why do you think a mere child was sent to guard the way to Shambhala? Because the old snake in Shambhala knew you would come and posted a guard that would make us look like villains if we attacked. You are being used , heroes!"

"Please!" Zhang hisses in Qora's grasp. "Father, I and the rest of the Lemurians mean humans no harm. I was sent when Father prophesized your arrival because I knew Killpatrick of the Justice Foundation. We are friends to heroes!"

"Your words cannot be trusted, snake!" the Sword-Saint roars. "Stop the alien from escaping!" Old Master Qian yells over Kisai's instruction.

But White Rose's attention is already elsewhere as Nightbird comes backflipping off the wall. Scarlet Blossom ducks out of the way, but White Rose shows her monstrously peerless skill as she correctly predicts that she is the target. With a swift series of blocks and counterpunches she deflects all of Nightbird's attacks wiith preternatural speed and is completely unharmed. "I will not let you disgrace his memory," she seethes at the heroine. "He died for you. He died to keep you alive! You robbed the world of him!"

You remember meeting not other human who fought with such grace and power. Not even Killpatrick.

You remember the clone of Killpatrick that Specter tried to build so long ago in her attempt to raise a superhuman army. You remember what it said to you.

"I AM NOT HIM," it says at last, the first words it has uttered. "HE IS NO LONGER HERE. YOU MUST MOVE ON."

The clone does not remove its mask. But Nightbird knows it is looking at her. "BE STRONG," it says.
All you can think of is: she has not moved on.

The glare from Aranel at White Rose, the expression if looks could kill then White Rose would be at least 30 feet under already. "You speciesist! Judging someone based on their species, rather than as an individual. That is one of the most arrogant things someone can do as if just because a species has a particular history individuals can't rise above it and choose a different path. And as Qora said he is only a child. Even if precious generations can't change their ways there is always hope as long as the children are given a chance to learn and grow." Turning to glare at Jade Dragon, she hadn't forgotten what he said about her last they met. "As for you, just because someone is a princess doesn't make them weak, soft, or pampered! This time I'm going to burn that lesson into you." With a focused gaze at the very ground beneath Jade Dragon, she willed sudden gout of flame to blast upward trying to envelop him.

White Rose sneers. "Speciesist? Dear ignorants, this is entirely unlike the kind of prejudice humans visit upon their own kind. Lemurians destroyed the human empire of Atlantis in ages past, the foundation of every human civilization. They are the mortal enemy of humanking and will always remain so!"

"No! The heroes are right!" Zhang cries. "Just because we are different, does not mean we cannot see reason. Not all of us are enamoured of that prehistoric war!"

Meanwhile, Jade Dragon screams in a decidedly very not-tough-guy fashion as Moonlight's blast gets him right in the gonads. "Very well!" he squeals, face red with agony. "I admit I have misjudged you, princess. Rest assured I will avenge this humiliation!" Pants on fire, he hops about in comical fashion for several moments before running out the back door. Loud crashing noises follow.

An instant later, the room fills with blue light as Gelert's aura shines brightly and waves of energy bombard the closely packed villains. The resulting blast explodes furniture, sends papers flying, smashes Scarlet Blossom against the far wall and flattens the Sword-Saint of the East. "These foes!" he exclaims. "You have won a reprieve, heroes!" The swordsman slices a rift in thin air with his blade, steps into it, and vanishes. Scarlet Blossom elects to vanish in a shower of lotus petals without taking a moment to deliver witty comebacks.

"Mistress! They have seized the advantage. We must retreat!" Old Master Qian shouts, taking cover behind his massive, man-sized gourd. Taoist talismans of warding glow on its polished surface as the artifact endures the bombardment from Gelert's ring.

"Useless!" White Rose roars. "Utter trash! How will we liberate Shambhala and topple its corrupt High Master when you cannot vanquish a handful of teenagers, their prettyboy mage, some alien brute, and... a dog!"

From next door, there comes an annoyed shout and several loud thumps on the wall. You don't need to understand Nepalese to know it must be some variant of 'Will you stop that racket?!' (which Gelert can confirm).

Moonlight's attack hits. Jade Dragon fails toughness by 3 degrees, and is defeated. As a rogue he instantly withdraws from the battlefield.

Then Gelert's area blast lands. Of the villains, White Rose manages to roll a 1 on toughness and is staggered, despite being of unusually high PL. The Sword Saint and Scarlet Blossom also fails by 2 degrees and, as a Rogue, both retreat. Qian manages to pass both saves and takes no damage.
