  • [3e IC] Adventures Assemble S2E3: Call to Arms!

Phoenix Bay has been a symbol of rebirth from the day the first pioneers reached the coast of the Pacific and settled down to build new lives. When Japanese super-powered forces firebombed it in World War II, the U.S. government rebuilt it grander and better than ever before in defiance. The result was one of the West Coast's greatest financial centers and an incubator of high-tech industry. While not quite the size of Freedom City or as awash in capes, the place has drawn its share of the criminal element. Throughout the ages there have been mystery men and masked crimefighters that opposed them and each generation has had its share of crusaders against crime.

But none of them were prepared for the day when an alien fleet appeared in the skies above the city. The invaders were as mysterious as they were silent, wielded science and sorcery alike, accepted no parley and took no prisoners. Most of the capes gave their lives to defend its people in the city's darkest hour. The few surviving heroes launched a desperate suicide attack on the alien mothership, destroying its power core and ending the Invasion. The aliens, who came to be known only as the Armada, were never seen again. Till this day the reasons for the invasion and why only Phoenix Bay was attacked remain a mystery.

One year later the wrecked Mothership down by Lakeside is a tourist trap and a captured starfighter is the city museum's hottest exhibit. Business as usual has returned to the financial towers of the Glass Canyon and high-tech corporations buzz with activity around the Feynman-Yamaguchi Reactor. Across the city, empty hero bases lie darkened and forgotten while gangs battle for dominance in the streets above. The old city centered on King's Junction is now the hideout for many a criminal mastermind. Smugglers and drug-runners take root in docks of Westbay. With the old guard wiped out, the city needs a new generation of protectors and again the Phoenix sings its siren song:

    Nightbird, Sunhawk & Gelert
    Orchestra Hall

"What the -- Arrgh!" Iron Maiden screams as Sunhawk's beam of fire hits her in the side, blasting her clear across the stage. As she crumples to the ground, her communicator squawks. "All Imperial Army units, withdraw and retreat to the warehouse! Repeat: all Imperial Army units..."

Iron Maiden climbs to her feet, gritting her teeth, and decides the odds are no longer favorable enough to stay. "You got lucky, girl," she says, stabbing a finger at Nightbird. "But one day your good fortune will run out. I'll be back!"

Iron Maiden points one fist at the hole in the roof and fires a wrist grapple-line gun that catches the edge. In a single fluid movement she vaults over the edge and vanishes.

Iron Maiden Toughness DC 25 (1d20+5=16) Failed by 9, Stunned and Bruised -1
I fiat and Iron Maiden escapes. All 3 of you gain 1 HP.

You can pursue her (no rolls needed); she flees in the direction of the warehouse.

      Locust, Vagabond & Grotesk
      Abandoned warehouse, Queen's Junction

With a few scrapes and bruises and the odd wrong turn or two, Locust manages to locate the abandoned warehouse at the address he'd picked up. It is a vast, monolithic building belonging to one of the old steelworks that dominated the area half a century ago, and in these modern times the streets are silent and mostly deserted. Strangely, there is no sight of Metallurge, robots, or anything that might look like an Imperial Army.

Suddenly the door of an old factory in front of the warehouse opens. Through it steps a long-haired man in a well-tailored coat and suit; he is holding the hands of a man in tight white pants, washboard abs and elfin features, and a girl with hip-length pink hair and pink-and-purple armor.

Before Locust can do or say much of anything the man in the lead steps on a landmine, which blows up all three of them.

"Sheesh," coughs the pink-haired girl, sprawled on the ground as the smoke clears. "Who mines random factory doors for kicks?"

"Every single door within a hundred feet of the warehouse is mined," says a feminine, synthesized voice. "They have no digital parts. I can't disarm them remotely."

As Vagabond exits the door, he steps on a landmine. Vagabond, Grotesk and Amethyst all have to make a DC 18 reflex save, followed by DC 23 (19) Toughness save.

Grotesk and Vagabond both get 1 HP for the complication.

Grotesk can make the save with his war form stats.

Amethyst Reflex DC 18, Toughness DC 23/19 (1d20+10=14, 1d20+8-2=19) she gets another bruise

Locust, the parting smoke of the explosion also reveals a face you didn't expect: Grotesk, that flayed-open giant your dad used to employ as a hench-monster. there was word he'd been destroyed in the Invasion, but yeah, that's him all right, snarling like he'd just been stung by a bee, before he picks amethyst up to ride on his shoulder

"Chase? CHASE! chase chase chase chase chase CHASE!" Gelert runs after Iron Maiden, his powers of flight letting him run on air to the hole in the ceiling. He runs out the hole and out of sight for a moment before going back and looking down the hole at Sunhawk and Nightbird. "Are you coming? It's chase time!"

He then forms a stairway of blue light from the floor to the hole in the ceiling.

Maybe Iron Maiden really was from the future somehow she was able to anticipate every punch or kick Imogen threw at the metal clad woman before launching her own attack in return.

Maintaining a defensive stance Imogen was able to deflect Iron Maidens attacks until she left her guard slightly too hard and a metal clad fist slammed hard into her solar plexus. Gasping for breath Imogen could only watch Iron Maiden flee the Orchestra Hall through watery eyes.

"I'm coming ... that b!tch is mine." Imogen replies making her way to the shiny blue stairway.

healing +8 [Extra: ranged +1] GM told me Nightbird doesn't need to do the recovery check in this case she's just healed of her damage condition.

                      All
                      Queen's Junction

Nightbird, Gelert and Sunhawk stay hot on Iron Maiden's tail and nearly catch her several times, but as they venture deep into the old industrial zone of Queen's Junction the difficult terrain makes it harder to corner her, and they eventually lose her close to a large warehouse. As they approach the building, they come across the other four heroes.

"They're all yours," Amethyst says to Locust from her perch on Grotesk's shoulder. She waves to the three newcomers. "Lemme guess. You guys just got hit by some weirdos from the future too, who know an awful lot about yourselves. They even knew to mine all the doors around here. It's like they knew we were..." Amethyst blinks. "Watch out," she starts, standing up on Grotesk's shoulder. "It's a --"

"A trap! And you all walked into it like idiots! Mwahahaha!" comes Forge's evil laugh.

Squadrons of Iron Men robots descend from the sky on trails of fire or pour out of buildings, carrying heavy weapons as Furnace ignites her fiery aura and floats off the roof she's on. Metallurge shows himself, cackling wildly, atop the warehouse and Forge is cracking the humongous knuckles of his powersuit on top of an electrical substation. From a roof above Grotesk's towering form, Iron Maiden appears with several of her elite assassins in tow. A giant, robotic dragon marches down the street to face down Nightbird, Gelert and Sunhawk and complete the encirclement.

Furnace jabs a finger wreathed in flames at the heroes down below. "Listen well, future leaders of the accursed Resistance. Metallurge may have screwed up and failed to send us back far enough --"

"Watch your tongue, wench! You can't prove it was my fault!" the accused shakes a cybernetic fist at her from the opposite roof.

"-- but powers or not, we shall obliterate you all the same. None defy the Emperor's iron fist!"

But Locust isn't paying attention to anything they say, because he recognizes Iron Maiden's face. She may be older, and scarred by the ravages of a future war, but he realizes who she is almost instantly -- Napalm, the same woman who trained him after his father's death!

Furnace is the leader and rolls on behalf of all the villains. Amethyst always acts at the end of the villain turn, after enemies but before bystanders.

Your conditions from the previous combats carry over into this one.
