  • Flat point per rank? (and other Hero Lab Questions)

    Hello!

How do you do to automatically put flat points per rank (except doing a custom extra / flaw every time)?

I'm not following. Can you give an example of how you want this to work versus how the current software works?

"Exposure –1 or –2 flat per rank
The effect’s potency is determined by the degree of exposure to something"

For example. I can only put -1 flat but it doesn't change the number of flat point when I increase the rank though.

{nods} I assume you're operating in the editor. Making a flaw not Flat is a simple matter of unchecking "Flat Cost".

That said, most of the "-1 or -2 flat per rank" modifiers were intended to not be based on the power rank (by definition, Flat costs don't scale with rank). Rather, they're ranked in and of themselves. So, "two" ranks in Exposure is the -2 flat reduction.

        Does that answer your question?

          Re: Flat point per rank?

Not exactly, when I add ranks, it only accounts the flat modifier as a normal flat modifier (the one which doesn't increase per rank). I cannot account it as a normal cost rank though, as it would still not be the right total cost.

Did I miss something in the editor?

Is there a way to make: The flat account INCREASE per Rank. Which is different from Flat number (which doesn't change) and Base cost?

I really don't understand what you're looking to do. Can you give me an example of how this would be used, that it would not be a flat amount depending on the rank of the Flaw / Quirk, and not increasing by rank? Preferably, if you can provide more than one example, that will help me understand what sort of math you're looking for.

Welp, I am just trying to translate "Building Better Mouse Trap" mechanics into Hero Lab.

Some ranked flaws / extras only increase the flat points per rank.

              For example.

              The normal version:
Power Cost = ((base effect costs + extras - flaws) x rank) + flat modifiers

              Well here it would be

Power Cost = ((base effect costs + extras - flaws) x rank) + flat modifiers + (flat modifier x rank)

Adding more flat points to the power cost without impacting on the base number.

                Re: Flat point per rank?

Ah. So you're basically trying to avoid the "Fractional costs" situation when Flaws drop it to 0 or below? Because otherwise, mathematically, it does work out the same due to the Distributive property. Or are you concerned with the display, whether it displays "7pp = (2/r - 1fl) x 6r + 1flat" versus "7 pp = (2/r) x 6r +1flat - 6flat"?

Side note, Exposure is "-1 or -2 to cost per rank" according to my copy of "Better Mousetrap", so it's a standard -1 or -2 Flaw unless I'm missing some other aspect of how this is laid out.

                  Re: Flat point per rank?

The only way I found so far, is to duplicate the effects, but then it's messy on the end paper. (so I have to photoshop them). If you look at the extras and flaws tables, you can see we have Cost +1 per rank, Cost +1 flat, or Cost +1 flat per rank. I guess I will just work it out in accordance to each characters in the end. Put more or less points depending on what and what. Getting the reference and roll with what I feel is balanced.

                    Re: Flat point per rank?

Yes. And all three of those are already able to be built in Hero Lab.
                    • +1 per Rank is what you get if the checkmark for "Flat Cost?" is not set and "Maximum Rank" is set to "-none-".
                    • +1 1-2 flat points is what you get if the checkmark for "Flat Cost?" is set and "Maximum Rank" is set to the maximum rank possible (which may be 1).
                    • 1 flat per rank is what you get if the checkmark for "Flat Cost?" is set and "Maximum Rank" is set to "-none-".

As best I can tell, "Cowing Shot" is built as Enhanced Skill (Intimidate) (Limited to Ranged Weapons), which takes it from 1 pp / 2 ranks to 1 pp / 3 ranks. Depending on how flexible you want to make it, you can either copy one of the entries that set up a power with all of the relevant ranks and extras and flaws, or you can just create your own that directly changes skill ranks. It all depends on how fancy you want to get.

Thank you! Question for now, do I have to always hit the "Test Now!" button everytime I finish an extra / item for example? Or can I do multiple items/modification and only hit the button later but all my modification will be taken in account, not just the item I am reviewing while I hit the button?

It's generally necessary to hit Test Now for each item, although you can also use Ctrl+R within Hero Lab to reload all datasets (it's more useful in authoring, but also works for multiple changes in the .user files).
