I find mine very useful so what's to be scared of? Its a solid company that puts out a quality product and I would consider it good value for money.

I bought Hero Lab back when they only had three datafiles, that was over 5 years ago and they now have 13 official data files.

I've since bought multiple datafiles for other games I've played and I don't have a single complaint with the program.

There aren't many bugs. Really, the issue is more often that is a bit too permissive, requiring GM oversight when players say, "But it validated in Hero Lab. Why can't I have a +9 damage tradeoff and Second Chance (All Important Checks)?"

And it does follow certain rules absolutely so it will flag things that are commonly handwaved, Summon PL capping at effect rank being the most annoying I've found.

I have no problems whatsoever with Hero Lab. All the builds I've put on here were made with it.

It uses a lot of the rules and text from the sourcebooks but (and I say this from a place of love) it's still basically a very stylized Excel spreadsheet. You can cheat on your taxes using Excel, that doesn't suddenly make it right. It's a tool, not an authoritative source.

I always twinge when someone compares Hero Lab to a spreadsheet. I get why it happens, but Hero Lab does so much beyond the initial character creation that it always bugs me.

I get that. It's a great program, makes so many things so much easier, I've been playing with it for almost a decade with no regrets, but I think the only thing that it does that couldn't be done with a heavily modded Excel sheet is the die-roller, and I wouldn't be surprised if Excel could do that too.

{nods} All of the checkboxes for current conditions are nice too, but they could be in Excel.

                          Re: Scared to purchase

I think the biggest pains in excel (if someone was determined to recreate everything) would be the party organization, item transfers, and encounter designer.

Nested items like AEs too... the spreadsheets were always kind of clunky with those.

                              Re: Scared to purchase

I liked it so much I bought it twice. Once years ago and loved it.

The email and computer I used with it went kaputski.

Then a few days ago I tried to make a character for a new campaign by hand. It sucked. Bought herolab again.

My main advice would be to make sure you use an email you'll always have access to (gmail, hotmail, whatever). Otherwise DO IT you'll dig it.
