repeat: due to lack of participation prior to the holidays, my gut says to end this game. Thanks for playing, everyone

Welcome to another experimental take on Crinoverse games, a lost adventure from the Back Issue Bins of Heroes past

It is a time of darkness and a world of fear, when superstition and the sword ruled, a time men speak of in hushed whispers as...

THE 1980'S...

You are six heroes of relative obscurity in late 1989, who are about to uncover a conspiracy to control the hearts and minds of generations to come, in amidst the glitz and glamor of Hollywood itself

this will be an adaptation of the Palladium games Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness module "Turtles Go Hollywood" for six-seven players of PL 8, 120 points, for M&M 3rd edition, and +3/-3 tradeoffs. this is also the sequel to my 2012 game "Truckin' Titans"

considering the source material, martial artists and/or mutant animals are encouraged, but I'll probably greenlight anything from the three cartoons the turtles have had (so aliens, cyborgs, street fighter grade martial arts, traditional super heroics, etc.)

so, let's see what you've got

Thread 2 (http://www.atomicthinktank.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=36241)
Thread 3 (http://www.atomicthinktank.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=46964)

the 1980's in the crinoverse were much as in the comics, most notably the dawn of the so-called Iron Age, the rise of morally ambiguous and cynical vigilantes over old fashioned and idealistic heroes, and a rise in violence in supercrime. Many cities, have an active ban on 'freelance' heroes (those not working directly for city government) at best, while others have outlawed superheroes entirely. this wave of anti-metaman prejudice comes after the 1988 democratc convention massacre, wherein dozens of people were killed by Metaman assassins trying to kill New York Senator Gregg Hartmann, considered by just about everyone to be the next Kennedy, but left a babbling, incoherent borderline mental patient after his brushes with death.

Not that there aren't rays of hope, such as the newly established Patriots and their 'junior league', the New Fighters for Freedom, but by and large the days of saving kittens from trees and getting the key to the city arenow things of the past.

Complications:
Looks like a good place to lie low: Cogwheel is hiding out on Earth until some business that went bad with the Pirates Guild blows over. They, apparently, do not have a sense of humor.
This'll be the big one: Cogwheel just can't resist trying to make a deal with a sucker.

Background

Cogwheel is a nonaligned Cybrtronian. Instead of signing up with a side in The Great War, he hit the road. While everyone else tore the homeworld to pieces, he set about making a living selling things. Things that people needed, but more commonly, things they didn't need, but which he could convince them they did. used Starships, miracle cures, maps the galactic ley-lines, whatever he could manage.

And it worked for awhile. Cybertronians are longer lived than most species, the galaxy is a big place and most of his targets were locals. Most anyone that took exception would never find them in their life span. And then he got greedy. How was he supposed to know The Ravagers had just signed up with the Pirates Guild? Or that those creates had larval Brood in them? Obviously something got mislabeled.

So now he's on Earth. Planet has been making a reputation holding off non-local threats, and their adventuring community is remarkably willing to forgive a bot's past if he makes himself useful. Just need to lie low for a century or so...

Complications
Young: Unfortunately, Brendan is 12-13, and people tend to let that color their impressions of him, rather than the super-genius and psychic that he is.
Puberty: Puberty suuuuuuucks.
Those People: Unknown black-ops types were responsible for experimenting on and empowering Brendan. They might show up again...
Amnesia: The fog of lost memories pretty much occludes Brendan's past life and what he went through during the time as a prisoner.

Background
He wishes he could remember further, but all Brendan can remember is being held prisoner by very mysterious people in a secret facility. Experimented on, with the goal of making him a superhuman for whatever reason. They succeeded in making him a super-genius psychic - and failed to prepare for the logical consequences.

After breaking out, Brendan wound up running, to anywhere but he chose Hollywood for now. A melting pot of a place to hide in with all sorts of attractions for a new-found adolescent. Now if only his age didn't get in the way where other people were concerned.

Hmm, I'm on the Fence about bringing Picasso back or bringing in a new character.

I shall contemplate this further.

Added Cogwheel's background.

For the record, I'm using the Mechanoid Biology feature to represent things like that he ages, just slowly, that he does eat and sleep, just not like humans do, has to make repairs rather than heal, and can't get biological diseases, but can get mechanoid ones.

"T Rocks"
Real Name: Ignatius "Iggy" Pealson
http://s29.postimg.org/ih1scyuh3/Anthrosaurs_Male_Tyrannosaur_by_predaguy.jpg
No Risk No Glory - Vince DiCola (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eOOAlJrQqk)

It all began the night before the big battle of the bands concert in Los Sauros. All the biggest bands in the region were gathering to prove who was the best, and finally have their big break and become rock stars. Iggy's band, the Mammal Munchers, was one of the bands entered but it seemed like a long-shot.

Iggy thought he would give his band an edge by sneaking into his dads lab and 'borrow' a device he had been working on, some kind of Resonance Amplifier, thinking a high tech amp would make his music louder and better. His father was a lead government research and developer, having been working on analyzing a strange red meteorite that had fallen to the planet, and trying to harness its latent extra-dimensional abilities.

The night of the battle, Iggy played his heart out with the band, hardly noticing that as he played strange things began to happen. Wind appeared where none was before, sets on the stage began to change, and bolts of force and light fired off like fireworks from nowhere. The crowd went wild and Iggy pushed himself to the edge as with the final chords he ripped a hole in space and was sucked into the resulting vacuum before disappearing from sight.

When he became aware again, he found himself in an alien world so much like his own yet so different! Hominids swarmed everywhere like an infestation, but somehow they had the ability to speak! He was horrified and disgusted as much as those he first met were... But he found they shared one passion in common. Music.

Motivations & Complications
I Wanna Be A Juke Box Hero Iggy is certain that his destiny is to become a huge rock star. Fame and Fortune are his end goals.
Not So Cold Blooded Iggy has a very gentle heart, and can't help himself but to come to anothers aid or help out others.
Meat is Meat After being transported, Iggy has seen meat in a new light and has become a very vocal vegan.
Vegetarian! Not Herbivore! Iggy takes huge offense at being called an 'herbivore', as its slang for weakling/coward.

Real Name: Taylor Grayditch

Age: 19
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Green

Daughter of two world class scientists, a geneticist and a chemist, Taylor had a fairly normal life until four years ago. Her parents had been hired to test the effects of various substances on the genetic structures of living things, usually using insects as test subjects, including what Taylor would later learn to be some early form of the street drug Blooze. Taylor had been visiting their lab when the freak fire claimed both of their lives and destroyed the majority of their research, and while she survived she was hospitalized for months as a result of the exposure to smoke and lab chemicals. The doctors said it was a miracle that she had not received more than a few small scars despite being so close to the source of the blaze.

By the time she was released the police investigation into the fire had yielded nothing and she had been shuffled off into the custody of her uncle who couldn't care less about raising a kid. After moving into Taylor's parents house and selling off whatever he could of their stuff, he basically hoisted Taylor off on the Benton House charity for troubled teens with barely a second thought. Which was fitting because Taylor's feelings of helplessness had manifested in a strew of mischief making and anti-social behavior. Beyond finishing high school she had no goals or direction in her life, until the night she snuck into her old home intent on taking back as much of what truly belonged to her as she could that she stumbled onto a hidden safe her uncle had not ransacked.

What she found was part of her parents research and the key to a storage unit, and some of the disturbing implications surrounding it. It was quickly clear that her parents death had not been an accident but part of some larger conspiracy that her parents had been drawn into.
Shortly after this revelation, Taylor was present at the Rio when the explosion claimed the life of Emmett Star, for the dual purpose of seeing her favorite musician as well as investigating a possible lead on the source of Blooze and its connection to her parents. While not caught in the explosion itself Taylor was exposed to Blooze used to spike the refreshments.

The results were... unexpected. Her previous exposure to the less refined version of the substance had strengthened her body against Blooze's tendency to cause wild mutations, stabilizing the changes into her current set of powers. With her new Ant like powers Taylor feels she might finally be able to bring the ones who killed her parents to justice, as FORMICA!

and for those wanting to talk about 'current events' in game without needing to figure out how real-world events played out in a world of jet powered apes and time travel,

Recent events (in no particular order)

after several incredibly successful years, the bottom drops out of the comics market in freedom city, and several comic book companies are ruined as the speculation bubble compensates, in addition to Foswell enterprises, a majority shareholder in several of them

the world famous Atom Family, virtual American royalty among the super-powered set, celebrates the birth of the newest Atom sibling, Chase Atom

Falconcrest City vigilante Black Wing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_(1989_film)) goes from urban legend to media darling after saving the city from the Beholder's homicidal artistry

the LAPD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethal_Weapon_2) busted a MAJOR drug operation being run through the Ambassadorial Consulate for the Kingdom of Thule. when the consulate pled Diplomatic immunity, the public response was "It's just been revoked!"

Jokers (deformed superhumans) across America nearly riot in outrage after former superhero Hiram "Fatman" Worchester recieves a proverbial slap on the wrist of five years probation for the "involuntary manslaughter" of celebrated nightclub owner Chrysalis, when the evidence was overwhelming that he'd slowly beaten her to death with his gravity-controlling powers

the masked vigilante known as "The Scorpion" blows up the special prisoners wing of Riker's Island Prison, killing several dozen inmates and guards alike

tensions continue to mount between the authorities and Joker Squatters on Liberty Island, now commonly called "The Rox". the standoff persists through the sorcerous, reality-bending powers of the Rox settlement's leader, Bloat

the paranormal investigation firm Ghostbusters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostbusters_II) has recently gone back in business

in sports, the Cleveland Indians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_(film)) beat the Yankees in the American League East Pennant Playoff

former washed-up children's television show host Picasso the Platypus returns to daytime TV, not just in children's entertainment, but rumored interest in a family friendly talk show, following talks with fellow entertainer Robert Underdunk Terwilliger, better known as "Sideshow Bob" on the Krusty The Klown Show

celebrated Danish action movie star and martial artist Franz Rayner (http://drmcninja.com/archives/comic/4p17/) all but single-handedly brings an end to what's now commonly being called "The Ninja War" by killing ninjas all across the country. its rumored that all the movies about one white guy beating up a bunch of ninjas and/or other Asian martial artists are simply based on snippets of Rayner's adventures. characters with a more detailed martial arts background know this is a lie, and that Rayner's 'victories' were nothing but a one-man murder spree against all ninjas, regardless of affiliation or alignment, and that his massacres have only ensured multiple lesser 'ninja wars' over the next decade to fill the power vacuum he's created

the newly established company Trans-Global Research Institute (or TGRI) continues to make a name for itself in all manner of scientific and electronic fields. rival companies such as ASTRO labs or the Gonzo institute are placing odds on when TGRI's corporate HQ gets hit by supervillains

Fair enough. The dark age started and ended a bit earlier in the Freedom Universe than it did in actual comics anyway. IIRC, Freedom's is mid 80's to early 90's, as opposed to late 80's to mid/late 90's in the real world.

yeah. and iirc, the general rule is Freedom City's an early adopter of trends, so their comics bubble burst first, causing a momentary panic through the rest of the speculation bubble, so yeah, things proceed as they do in the real world. i'll adjust it

Not to get you off on another 2 Week Project Kreu, but you or Crinos or someone with an appreciation for that setting and humor needs to run a Freedom Force game, based off of the video game. I'm watching a Lets Play of it, and man I'd forgotten how silly and fun those games are. It'd be one of those things where I don't want to run that game, but I'd love to help co-develop the setting, move the timeline along to the 70's, maybe have the Freedom Force version of Crisis on Infinite Earths in the 80's, etc.

COMPLICATIONS
Responsibility – Circle of the Dragons: Lance is a member of the Circle of Dragons, a group of martial artists dedicated to preservation of peace and freedom by keeping a lot of unpleasant forces asleep, banished, imprisoned or dead. While having been given the mantle of the White Dragon, he is still not considered a true master within the group, and as such must often rely on them for guidance and direction, as well as deal with the missions they give him.

Motivation – Honor and Justice: Each of the Dragons of the Circle represents certain virtues. White is equated with Justice, which is why Lance was called to take up its mantle. Everything he does is motivated to see that justice gets done, as well as to observe the codes of honor the Circle preaches. As such, it is very easy for Lance to find himself getting pulled into adventures due to his sense of justice, even while he must struggle to maintain his code of honor.

Code – Give Peace a Chance: Lance is a capable fighter, but prefers to fight those whom deserve his foot in their face, or to get into friendly matches with other skilled fighters. If he can diffuse a situation with talking, he’d much rather do that than get into an ultimately pointless fight that will get other people hurt.

Reputation – Ninja Killer: The major threat the Circle of Dragons has been dealing with in America has been the resurgence of the Cult of the Black Banner, a ninja cult that had been forced into hiding for years, which has resurfaced in the United States. While the White Dragon has made a name for himself as a hero, a lot of his fights have involved him fighting large groups of ninja, and apparently slaughtering them in droves. While most of these ninja were undead and all of them were evil, many ninja groups now view him as a ‘ninja killer’ like Franz Rayner, and even associate the two together. As a result, many good ninja clans view the White Dragon with suspicion, if not outright hostility.

Quirk - Not Very Subtle: Lance does not have any ranks in Stealth. This is not an accident. Simply put, the White Dragon is not very subtle when it comes to his plans. When there is action that needs doing, he will often take the most direct route to do so. He will kick in the front doors of a stronghold or crash in through the ceiling, or even punch down a wall. The White Dragon soars high and shines brightly, it does not lurk in the shadows.

Secret Identity: Lance keeps his identity of the White Dragon a secret, mostly to protect himself and anyone close to him from reprisals by the various groups he’s ticked off.

BACKSTORY

Lance grew up in California, son to a fairly wealthy couple who were both involved in the movie industry. Fifteen years after Lance’s birth, his parents were approached by a group of Asian men, who informed them of what their next project would be, with more than a few hinted threats bandied about. Neither of Lance’s parents buckled under the threats, assuming they were just typical corporate goons trying to muscle their way into the entertainment industry. And unfortunately for those two, they were wrong.

The men had been part of the Cult of the Black Banner, a ninja group so named because they were so evil that no Japanese lord would have them serve under him. Thus their banner was a plain black canvas. While forced into hiding for many hundred years, the group had recently re-awakened the souls of many of their past members, giving them a legion of spirits who needed only a vessel to contain them. The Black Banner had migrated to America, using the martial arts surge of the 70’s to infiltrate the entertainment industry and promote a wave of ninja films. Using this propaganda, they were then able to recruit individuals to join their cult, and those of a sufficiently evil and corrupt nature could be possessed by the spirits of the former Black Banner ninja.

When the Black Banner returned for Lance’s family, it was in the dead of night and full uniform, with both of his parents brutally killed to be made an example of. Lance would have died as well, but the Black and Gold Dragons of the Circle of Dragons intervened, slaying many of the ninja and rescuing the teenager. The police chalked the death up to some nuts with a ninja fascination, but Lance knew differently, and was invited by the Circle of Dragons to be trained to fight against them. Nearly a decade later and Lance was given the mantle of the White Dragon, and now fights all manner of supernatural evil across his homeland, but especially the Black Banner Cult.

Awesome. I just want to make sure everything works out like I want it to, and if anyone has any suggestions on the character, please feel free. My understanding is that, if I built the Super Sense right, then its effectively a type of mental awareness that extends 100 feet around him before he takes any perception penalties, and lets him see perceive things in spite of invisibility or darkness. Which would seem to be critical when fighting ninja.

Just replace "ninja" with "Pirate" or "cowboy" or "Biker" or something. The did it all the time during the 80's and 90's.

besides, the original module was built with four martial artists in mind, so while I would like people to have their niche, I'm okay with some overlap. you'd mentioned a 'Jem' based character in the previous thread, that's still quite viable

Also, 'martial artist' is a very flexible term. My guy's kind of bare bones when it comes to skills and feats. A weapons expert with more feats would play very different from my guy.

Flare - PL 8
Real Name Alica Star
Age 19
Height 5'7"
Hair Pink
Eyes Blue

Alica Star grew up with a comfortable childhood, attending the best schools and assisting her mother's frequent charity work, but she and her father--the respected lawyer and founder of the Star Group law firm, Emmett Star--never saw eye-to-eye on Alica’s love of music and desire to perform. By high school, she’s begun sneaking out to sing for local clubs and talent search contests, using the alter-ego Flare to hide from her father's watchful gaze and numerous colleagues in the entertainment industry. Their relationship only grew rockier when her mother died in a car accident.

When Alica finally graduated and announced she’d forgo law school to become a professional pop idol, years of simmering tension came to a head. Thomas confronted her outside the Rio, the city's new cutting-edge techno dance club, but a mysterious explosion from the club's unusual special-effects equipment leveled the building, killing Thomas and severely injuring Alica.

When she finally recovered weeks later, Alica was horrified to discover her father's sleazy partner--Raymond Emil--seized control of the Star Group in her absence, transforming it into a questionable media law and representation company. Left alone and penniless, Alica turned to performing fulltime to fund herself and her mother's last remaining charity, all the while curious how Ray managed to maneuver himself so perfectly and so quickly to take control of Star Group. She soon discovered that the mysterious explosion had changed her life in even more ways, imbuing her with what she calls "synergy," the power to control light and sound, and transmute between the two. Originally using her powers as built-in special effects to augment her performances as Flare, Alica soon discovered she could focus her abilities to blind and disorient others.

With Star Group now pushing substandard rock-and-roll music and exploiting their performers, Alica has resolved to use her new abilities to protect musicians, clean up her father's legacy, and uncover the truth about his untimely death.

Complications

Stage Name No one suspects that plain and meek Alica Star is the rising music star Flare.
It's Showtime Alica’s powers work by shaping ambient light and sound, and transmuting one into the other. Without bright lights (like spotlights) or loud noises (such as her portable radio, a roaring crowd, or a house band), she can’t use or maintain her Synergy powers.
Being a Grown-Up By day, Alica runs (and lives in) Benton House, a struggling home for troubled teens founded by her mother. She occasionally has to teach valuable lessons to adorable troubled teens.

Real Name: Taylor Grayditch

Age: 19
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Green

Daughter of two world class scientists, a geneticist and a chemist, Taylor had a fairly normal life until three years ago.

Kreuzritter

right, then, because it might affect Formica's origin (and why Flare, Formica and White dragon are doing what they're doing when we open the story. most of this will be repeated once the IC thread goes up)

The City of Angels is no stranger to the manifold chemical flavors of vice, from 'mostly harmless' marijuana grown in secret gardens to the rich and powerful having the finest cocaine flown in from Bogata, to the rampant scourge of crack that's spreading through the inner city.

last year, the outgoing Reagan administration pushed hard for the War on Drugs, and the incumbent administration of George H. W. Bush continues that trend

but now there's a new poison on the streets...

Blooze

also known as Blue Ice, Juice, Swank and Ooze, Blooze is a top-level designer drug, chemically similar to methamphetamines and easily as addictive. smoke it, snort it, drop it or shoot it, you can take this pale blue luminescent gel however you want. bad enough in ttself, but Blooze's effects are seemingly unpredictable, causing anything from leaving the user highly susceptible to suggestion, or enhancing their physical abilities to almost superhuman levels, at the cost of ravaging their body afterwards, and as implied, overdose leads to a most gruesome death. some who've taken blooze have developed permanent superpowers, but those odds are infinitesimal.

but the worst part? there's no apparent rhyme or reason to how Blooze is making its way into the city. there are pushers offering 'free samples', but just as often dance clubs or college parties will find their refreshments mysteriously spiked, such as the Rio, discovered in the wake of the freak accident that claimed the life of respected Lawyer Emmett Star, while the Soaring Crane Karate school has been banned and shut down after it was revealed its owner and founder, Souichiro Watanabe had been using Blooze to dope his students to win tournaments. pleading innocence and barely avoiding prison, Souichiro was left penniless and humiliated by the hardball court tactics of the Star Group in the resulting lawsuits, and took his own life in disgrace.

White Dragon, Souichiro was a friend of yours, and an associate of the Circle of Dragons. it falls to you to restore his honor

Ares
12-09-2014, 02:30 PM
Frankly, AoE effects are a bit broken as is, partly a hold over from its original D20 days. It seems like if you make the Dodge DC on an AoE effect, then you managed to get out of the area of effect and would be undamaged by it. Otherwise it's almost an auto hit, and Evasion doesn't even let you avoid it now.

kenseido
12-09-2014, 02:39 PM
Frankly, I think Evasion in 2e was horribly broken. It is the holdover from when Area Effects did damage regardless (i.e. you took some damage from the fireball regardless of your save). In M&M, you get a Toughness save after the Dodge/Reflex save, so you can always tank the damage.

And I never considered the Dodge/Reflex save to be diving out of the way. It's more like you are covering up your vitals so they don't get affected.

That doesn't really make much sense to me. For a +1 cost, Area lets you hit multiple targets over a wide range with an attack that they cannot evade at all, they can only hope to mitigate some of the damage at best. It's a relatively cheap way to hit a lot of folks with an attack that is guaranteed to hit. That's not really in keeping with the comics medium, where you see guys like Batman, Spider-Man and so on dodge grenades and missiles by leaping out of the blast range. Evasion at least allowed characters to have the option of being able to get out of the way of the attack.

If you want to argue that in order to dodge the effect that it costs you your next move action and you have to have a movement ability that lets you get either behind cover or outside of the blast radius, then that would be an acceptable compromise to me. It would be reflective of the medium, and prevents things like normal humans avoiding explosions that can engulf city blocks. But to me, I'd have a hard time believing the thing that gives you the possibility of not getting hit is somehow more broken than the thing that guarantees you're getting hit.

And I never considered the Dodge/Reflex save to be diving out of the way. It's more like you are covering up your vitals so they don't get affected.

DC Adventures, Page 126, and I quote:

Potential targets in the area are permitted a Dodge resistance check (DC 10 + Effect Rank) to avoid some of the effect (reflecting ducking for cover, dodging out of the way, and so forth).

kenseido

As opposed to an attack you have no chance of dodging? You at least had to make that Reflex save, which was never a certain thing. It at least it gave you the ability to avoid the attack the way defense focused characters should.

Though now that I think about it, Immunity to Area Attacks would probably be a 5 point Immunity. Make it Check Required and there you go.

kenseido

When Immunity to All Toughness Saves is 80pp, you think 5pp is fair for all Area Effects, whether Toughness or not? I think that is a little off.

When Immunity to All Toughness Saves is 80pp, you think 5pp is fair for all Area Effects, whether Toughness or not? I think that is a little off.

It says Immunity 5 covers a particular damage effect or descriptor, which would seem to cover Area Effects, being a particular damage effect. As it also covers all Entrapmet effects, all Alteration effects, etc. It doesn't protect against common power descriptors, just a single Extra. All effects without that extra don't get the immunity.

kenseido
12-09-2014, 04:44 PM
Again, we will have to agree to disagree. In my game, it would cost a lot more.

Ares
12-09-2014, 05:03 PM
It's best we agree to disagree and drop it, as I think we're going to keep going around in circles. An attack that is completely impossible to avoid is always going to come off as far more broken to me than something that lets you avoid a specific type of attack if you manage a dice roll. One is going to do damage regardless, one gives a chance to avoid a specific damage type based on the luck of a dice roll. It's for similar reasons I'm not fond of Perception Range attacks.
